On the ROG Ally, a desktop-versus-game control mode or a changed button mapping can make working hardware seem unresponsive. Check the mode and mappings, calibrate sticks or triggers only when those inputs are affected, then check ASUS updates. If the same control still fails across apps and modes, contact ASUS support before opening the device or erasing its data.
Identify which controls fail and where
Note the affected controls—such as face buttons, bumpers, triggers, or sticks—and whether the problem is constant or intermittent. Test them in more than one place, such as Windows, Armoury Crate SE, Steam, and another game. A control that works in one context but not another can point to a mode or mapping issue; that pattern alone does not prove the cause.
If the problem began after a software or configuration change, include that detail when troubleshooting or contacting support. Before trying repairs, confirm the exact ROG Ally model: service instructions can be model-specific.
Check control mode and button mappings
Choose the intended mode
Open Command Center and check whether the Ally is using the mode you need. Armoury Crate SE provides Gamepad Mode and Desktop Mode. The control behavior you expect in a game may differ from desktop navigation.

Review mappings and profiles
In Armoury Crate SE, inspect the button assignments for the relevant global configuration and any game profile. A button may have been reassigned or disabled. The app also supports using the gamepad as a mouse on the desktop.
If Armoury Crate SE was uninstalled and desktop controls are unavailable, use the touchscreen to download and reinstall it from the ASUS product support site. Choose resources for your exact model.
Handle Steam desktop navigation separately
ASUS distinguishes Steam Big Picture Mode from Steam’s desktop interface: the joysticks and buttons work in Big Picture Mode, while desktop navigation may require switching the Ally to Desktop Mode. Open Command Center and manually select Desktop Mode to use the controls as a mouse in Steam’s desktop interface. See ASUS’s Steam controls FAQ.
Calibrate affected sticks or triggers
Armoury Crate SE’s Calibration area supports the left and right sticks, left and right triggers, and gyro. If a stick or trigger is the affected input, follow the on-screen recalibration flow for that control. Calibration is not a fix for an unresponsive face button.

For sticks, Armoury Crate SE also provides dead-zone, outer-threshold, response-curve, and anti-deadzone settings. A dead zone is how far a stick moves before input registers; changing these values can alter responsiveness. Trigger sensitivity is configurable too. Adjust these settings when appropriate, but do not treat them as a remedy for a physically stuck or nonresponding button.

Check ASUS drivers and firmware
In Armoury Crate SE, open Update Center and check for relevant driver or firmware updates. If you need driver or BIOS resources, use the official support page for your exact Ally model. Available packages and interface labels can change, so select the current resources shown for your device rather than relying on a version number from another model or date. Start at ASUS Support.
Escalate failures that persist across apps and modes
If the same control remains unresponsive after you have checked modes, mappings, relevant calibration, and ASUS updates, contact ASUS support for model-specific help and local warranty or service options. A hardware fault is possible, but these symptoms alone do not establish one.
ASUS lists a customer self-repair service manual for the 2023 ROG Ally, model RC71L. Confirm that the manual applies to your device and check warranty implications before opening it. The manual is available through ASUS’s model-specific support resources; do not assume its instructions apply to another Ally generation.
Keep Cloud Recovery as a later option
Cloud Recovery is an operating-system recovery measure, not a first response to one suspect button. ASUS says it restores the OS storage to its original state and erases its data. Back up important files first; if you cannot back them up or recovery cannot be completed, ASUS directs users to a service center. Read ASUS’s Cloud Recovery guidance before proceeding.
