If the app opens but a connected device or feature fails, check the device’s driver support separately: app emulation does not make an incompatible driver work. Use the steps below to identify which part is failing and try the relevant fixes.
First, confirm that your PC runs Windows on Arm
Open Settings > System > About and check System type. Microsoft identifies an Arm-based PC by the “ARM based processor” entry. If your PC is not Arm-based, these steps may not address the problem.
Work out whether the app or its driver is failing
If the app itself will not launch
Windows 11 Arm can emulate many x86 and x64 applications, but compatibility is not guaranteed. Check Microsoft Store or the software publisher’s website for an app update, a native Arm64 edition, or current Windows on Arm support information. Microsoft’s Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ explains the platform’s app and device limitations.
Some apps depend on system-level components or drivers that are not supported on the PC. In that case, the app may fail to install, refuse to start, or work only partly even if Windows can emulate its main x86 or x64 program.

If the app opens but a device or feature does not work
Treat this as a separate driver-support problem. A peripheral or app that relies on a driver generally needs that driver built into Windows or provided by its developer for Arm64. Ask the app publisher or device manufacturer about support for the exact app version or device model. Do not assume that a working emulated app means its driver is compatible.
Try fixes in this order
- Update the app. Install available updates through Microsoft Store or the software publisher’s update process.
- Check for Arm support. Look for a native Arm64 version or the publisher’s Windows on Arm compatibility guidance. If the publisher says the app, service, or required driver is unsupported, a Windows setting cannot supply that missing support.
- Try the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter for an older app. Microsoft lists it as a general option when an older program has no available update. It may help with some Windows compatibility problems, but it is not an Arm-specific fix and cannot make an unsupported Arm driver work. See Microsoft’s guidance for making older apps compatible.
- For a printer, try Windows’ Add device flow if the maker’s installer fails. Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Add device, unless the manufacturer provides different Windows on Arm instructions for your printer. Microsoft recommends this route for adding a printer on an Arm PC when its installer does not work. See Microsoft’s printer-driver guidance.
- Check Windows Update for printer drivers. Microsoft recommends Windows Update as the path for printer-driver updates. If Windows detects the printer but features remain limited, consult the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model and ask whether a fuller Arm64 driver or another supported setup is available.
- Contact the responsible vendor if the issue remains. Give the publisher or manufacturer your Windows version, app version or exact device model, what works, and what fails. They can confirm whether a supported Arm64 app or driver exists.
Understand printer support and partial functionality
Microsoft describes Windows’ modern print platform as architecture-independent, but that does not mean every printer feature or legacy driver works on Arm. Some older printer drivers are incompatible. A printer may therefore install or print through Windows’ built-in support while vendor-specific features remain unavailable; the manufacturer can confirm what is supported for that model. When to stop troubleshooting
Reinstalling an app or trying a compatibility setting may help with some older-software problems, but neither creates a missing Arm64 driver. If the publisher or manufacturer confirms that it does not support the required app, service, or driver on Windows on Arm, the practical next step is a vendor update or a supported alternative. Avoid assuming that a generic adapter, driver updater, or third-party repair tool can resolve an architecture mismatch.
