“Application error: a client-side exception has occurred” means a website encountered an uncaught error in client-side code; the message alone does not identify the cause or prove your browser is broken. Reload once, then try a private window or another browser to help isolate browser-specific factors. If you operate the site, inspect the first relevant browser-console exception and stack trace, then investigate the code and deployment context.
What the client-side exception message means
Next.js describes this message as a client-side error in a production application that was not caught by an error boundary. The banner is generic: the browser console may provide more information, but the message itself does not identify a particular code defect or browser problem.
There is no single fix supported for every occurrence. The next steps depend on whether you are visiting the site or developing or operating it, and on when and where the error appears.
If you are visiting the website
Try these low-cost checks to help distinguish a browser-specific issue from one the site owner needs to investigate. They are troubleshooting suggestions, not guaranteed fixes.

If the error returns, note the page and what you did before it appeared rather than repeatedly resetting browser data.
- Try the page in a private or incognito window. If it works there, extensions or stored site data are possible factors to isolate; this result does not establish the cause.
- If the problem began after enabling a translation tool or another page-modifying extension, temporarily disable it and test again. Individual reports describe translation-related errors, but they do not show that translation tools generally cause this message.
- Try a different browser. Note whether the issue affects one page or several, and whether it happens before or after signing in.
- If the error persists, report it to the site owner. Include the page URL, browser and version, time, exact visible message, and steps that reproduce it. A screenshot or console error may help if you can share it safely. Do not send passwords, tokens, cookies, or private account information.
A Microsoft Q&A moderator has suggested hard reloads, clearing cache and cookies, disabling extensions, trying Private mode or another browser, and clearing site storage. These are forum troubleshooting suggestions, not a universal remedy; the thread records that the initial suggestions did not solve the original poster’s issue.

If you develop or operate the website
The visible banner is not the underlying exception. Use the browser’s developer tools and the application’s deployment context to investigate the actual failure.
- Open the failing page and inspect the first relevant error in the browser’s Console, including its stack trace. Next.js documentation specifically directs readers to the console for additional information.
- Reproduce the same route and actions. Compare the browser, route, and behavior in development and in a production build.
- Use the stack trace to inspect the implicated application code, including client-side rendering and browser-only APIs. If the problem occurs only after deployment, also review the deployment and application logs.
- Compare the failing deployment and route behavior with a working context. A historical Next.js report describes a production-only routing or middleware problem, but that case does not establish middleware as a general cause.
- Test any suspected extension or translation tool both enabled and disabled before changing application behavior. Reports of translation-related exceptions are individual cases, not proof of a general Next.js defect.
Why the exact error and context matter
Reports associated with this message describe different situations, including a production routing or middleware issue and translation-related DOM errors. These are case-specific examples, not a ranked list of causes. Without the console exception, affected route, browser, and deployment details, the banner cannot reveal which explanation applies.

Error boundaries: graceful handling, not a fix
Next.js recommends using an error boundary so an uncaught client-side failure can display a controlled fallback instead of leaving the page in an unhandled error state. An error boundary improves how the application handles a failure; it does not repair the underlying bug. Continue investigating the exception separately.

Does this message mean my browser is broken?
No. It indicates an uncaught client-side failure in the website, but the generic message does not identify the cause or prove that the browser is at fault. The browser console and the circumstances of the failure can provide more useful clues.

Will an error boundary fix the bug?
No. It can render a fallback when a client-side error occurs, improving failure handling for visitors. The originating exception still needs to be investigated and fixed separately.
