If an Apple TV episode won’t play, check Apple’s service status, your account, connection, stream limits, and device software in that order. If the Download button is missing, first check where you’re using the Apple TV app: downloads aren’t supported on Apple TV hardware, smart TVs, streaming devices, or the web. They’re available only on supported iPhone, iPad, Mac, or PC devices, and only for eligible titles.
Fix an Apple TV episode that won’t play
Work through these checks in order, retrying the episode after each change. Apple’s guidance covers the Apple TV app; third-party channel content may also depend on the channel provider’s service and rules.
- Check for a service interruption. Visit Apple’s troubleshooting guidance, which links to Apple System Status. If the episode comes from an Apple TV channel or another provider, check that provider’s service status too. Wait until an outage is resolved before troubleshooting your device further.
- Confirm your Apple Account is signed in. Make sure the account shown in the app is the one associated with the subscription or purchase. If you can’t sign in, use Apple’s password reset or two-factor authentication support linked from its playback troubleshooting page.
- Improve the connection. If you’re on cellular with a weak signal, switch to Wi-Fi. Apple says, “Streaming HD content requires 8 Mbit/s or faster.” That is Apple’s published threshold, not a guarantee of smooth playback: network congestion and service conditions can still affect a stream.
- Try the same episode on another device using the same connection. If it fails there too, the network or service may be the cause. Apple recommends contacting your internet service provider when this test points to a network problem.
- Check whether too many devices are streaming. Apple says most Apple TV subscription content supports six simultaneous streams, while most Apple TV channels support up to three; exceptions apply to both. An Apple Music student subscription that includes Apple TV access allows one device at a time. Check the current terms for your specific service and title.
- Update the app and device, then restart. On Apple devices, update the operating system to get app updates. On Windows, update Windows and drivers, then update Apple TV through the Microsoft Store. Compatible connected TVs, streaming devices, and consoles should update the app automatically. Restart the device after updating.
- Reduce competing network use. Pause other heavy downloads or streams and restart the device if playback remains poor or keeps stopping. On a device that supports downloads, trying to download the episode can also help determine whether the problem is limited to streaming.
Run the Apple TV app’s network diagnostic, if available
On supported smart TVs, streaming devices, gaming consoles, and some cable or satellite services, open Apple TV app > Settings > Video Troubleshooting > Start, then follow the prompts. Apple notes that this diagnostic’s availability varies by region and device. See its video connection troubleshooting guide.
Why the Download button may be missing
A missing control may be expected behavior rather than a fault. The Apple TV app does not support downloads on Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD, smart TVs, streaming devices, or tv.apple.com. Those platforms can stream, but you’ll need a supported iPhone, iPad, Mac, or PC to save an eligible title for offline viewing. A channel may also choose not to permit downloads, even on a supported device.

Keep the service and device terms straight: Apple TV is an app available on multiple platforms; Apple TV is also a subscription service, and Apple TV channels are separate offerings. Content shown in the app can include third-party subscriptions, rentals, or purchases, so appearing in the app doesn’t necessarily mean a title is included with an Apple TV subscription or can be downloaded.
Download an eligible episode on a supported device
- Open the Apple TV app on a supported iPhone, iPad, Mac, or PC and find the episode.
- Select Download. For a series, choose a season and download the full season or individual episodes when those options are offered.
- To find completed downloads, open Library > Downloaded.
Apple’s instructions and device restrictions are in its download and streaming guide. If the control still doesn’t appear, check that the device is supported and that the particular channel or title permits downloads.

What can block or interrupt a download?
- Channel or title restrictions: Not every Apple TV channel permits downloads, and availability can vary by title.
- Device or simultaneous-download limits: The account may have reached a limit. Apple may alert you when one is reached. Delete completed downloads on devices using the account to free up room or capacity.
- Cellular restrictions: On iPhone or iPad, review Settings > Apps > TV for cellular download restrictions.
- Download quality and size: In the same settings, High Quality uses more data and takes longer than Fast Downloads. Each additional audio language increases the download size.
- Storage: A larger file, including one with extra audio languages, requires more available device storage. Remove downloads you no longer need if space is limited.
iPhone and iPad may also offer Automatic Downloads. When enabled, the app can download the next two episodes of a show you’ve started in Continue Watching, then automatically delete them after viewing. Settings and options vary by device. Apple documents these controls in its Apple TV app settings guide for iPhone and iPad.
How long do downloads remain available?
There is no single expiry rule for every episode. Apple says most Apple TV channel downloads are available for up to 30 days, though some channels expire sooner. For some Apple TV subscription downloads, the title expires 48 hours after playback starts or 30 days after download, whichever comes first. Check the terms for the specific title and service; these limits are not universal.

Choose streaming or downloading for your situation
| Consideration | Streaming | Downloading |
|---|---|---|
| Where it works | Apple TV hardware, smart TVs, streaming devices, and tv.apple.com support streaming. | Supported iPhone, iPad, Mac, or PC; not Apple TV hardware, smart TVs, streaming devices, or tv.apple.com. |
| Content eligibility | Playback still depends on access to the title, account, service status, and stream limits. | The channel and title must permit downloads; device and download limits can also apply. |
| Connection and data | Requires a working connection while watching. Apple’s stated HD threshold is 8 Mbit/s or faster. | Requires a connection to download; after a completed download, it can be watched offline while it remains available. |
| Storage and quality | Does not save an episode as a download on the device. | Uses device storage; High Quality and additional audio languages increase download size. |
When the cause is still unclear
The most useful next detail is where the failure occurs. If the same episode fails on multiple devices on the same network, focus on the connection or service; if it fails on just one device, focus on that device’s app, software, or sign-in. For more targeted help, note the device model, operating-system and app versions, region, exact error message, and whether the episode is from an Apple TV subscription, a channel, or a rental or purchase.
