Start by identifying whether the problem affects one song or your whole library, and whether the track is an Apple Music catalog song, an iTunes Store purchase, or a local file. A greyed-out song, “No Longer Available,” an exclamation mark, and a song that plays online but not offline point to different fixes. Use the matching symptom below before changing Sync Library or removing anything.
First, identify what is failing
Check the track’s status and where it came from. This prevents treating a catalog change like a damaged file or needlessly resetting a library.
- One song or a whole library? If many songs are missing across devices, check account and Sync Library settings first. If only one local track fails, check its file or status.
- What does the app show? Note whether the song is greyed out, marked “No Longer Available,” marked “Waiting,” or has an exclamation mark.
- Does it play online? If it plays while connected but not offline, it may simply not be downloaded.
- What is the track’s source? Apple Music catalog tracks, iTunes Store purchases, and music imported from a computer have different recovery paths.

Check your Apple Account and Sync Library
Make sure each device is signed in to the Apple Account associated with the Apple Music subscription, iTunes Match subscription, or purchase. Sync Library requires an Apple Music or iTunes Match subscription and the same Apple Account on the devices you want to keep in sync. Confirm that the devices are online and Sync Library is enabled on each one.

Apple’s current settings paths are:
- iPhone or iPad: Settings > Apps > Music > Sync Library.
- Mac: Open the Music app, then choose Music > Settings > General and select Sync Library.
- Windows: In Apple Music, open Sidebar Actions > Settings > General and turn on Sync Library.
Menu names can vary with OS and app versions. Apple’s guide to turning on Sync Library has the current setup details.
If the library lives on a computer and is not appearing elsewhere, check the cloud status of the affected songs and choose “Update Cloud Library” on the computer that holds the local library first. Then update it on the computer that is meant to receive the synced library. Large libraries can take time to finish syncing.

Before toggling Sync Library off and on: Apple says turning it off removes downloaded music from the device. Keep a separate backup of music files you own or imported before changing library settings or local files. Apple states, “Apple Music isn’t a backup service.” Subscription downloads should not be treated as permanent purchased copies.

Fix the symptom that matches your track
Greyed-out song
A greyed-out song can reflect a restriction, a hidden item, an account mismatch, a missing local original, or a catalog change. Check explicit-content restrictions if the affected track has explicit lyrics. For a purchased song, make sure you are using the purchasing Apple Account and that the computer is authorized where required; also check whether the item is hidden. For a catalog track, look for an alternative edition or version in Apple Music.

“No Longer Available”
This message can mean the track was removed from the Apple Music catalog in your region. Search Apple Music for another edition, album, or version. Catalog availability varies by country or region, so an alternative may not appear everywhere. If you bought the song from the iTunes Store, use the purchase recovery steps below rather than treating it as a subscription-catalog track.
Exclamation mark or missing local track
An exclamation mark on a local song means the Music app cannot locate its original file. Find the original file and restore its location, locate other missing files if prompted, or import the track again from its original source. A library entry alone cannot play or sync a local track whose source file is unavailable. See Apple’s instructions for missing and greyed-out music.

“Waiting” or a song that will not finish syncing
Keep the computer holding the local file online, choose “Update Cloud Library,” and allow the sync to complete. If a local track remains stuck, Apple suggests deleting that library entry and importing the track again from its original source. Keep your source file safe before removing or reimporting anything.

First verify the Apple Account used to buy the song. On a computer, authorize it if required, and check Hidden Items in the account’s purchase settings. Then redownload the purchase from the iTunes Store. Apple’s redownload-purchase guide gives device-specific steps. A purchase is recovered through the purchase account; toggling a subscription library is not a substitute for checking that account.

Song plays online but not offline
Apple Music tracks need to be downloaded for offline listening. Apple says Sync Library must be on before downloading Apple Music music to iPhone. On iPhone, add the song to your library, touch and hold the track, then tap Download. Albums and playlists also have a download control. Apple’s download instructions explain the available controls.

For Windows playback or device-sync failures, check the file and computer as well as the Apple Music library:
- Update Apple Music, Windows, and related Apple software.
- Confirm that the local audio file uses a format supported by the app.
- Check computer authorization for tracks purchased from the iTunes Store.
- For device syncing, check whether media-file organization or security software is interfering.
- If only particular local tracks fail, isolate those tracks and restore their local copies from the original source if necessary.
