If antivirus software is using a lot of CPU, first check whether it is scanning or updating, then let that work finish while the PC is otherwise idle. Update the antivirus, review any recently changed protection settings, and run a malware scan only if there are other signs of infection. High CPU use alone does not identify the cause.
The menu examples below are for Windows and Microsoft Defender. Other antivirus products have their own controls, so use the vendor’s instructions when labels or options differ.
1. Check which process is using CPU and when
Open your operating system’s process monitor and identify the process consuming CPU. On Windows, Task Manager can show the process and its current CPU use. Note whether the activity coincides with a scan, an update, or repeated work on particular files. Microsoft recognizes high CPU as a possible antivirus performance symptom, but CPU use by itself does not establish what is causing it. Microsoft’s performance guidance is written for Windows and Windows Server environments.
2. Let scans and updates finish under lighter load
Antivirus scans use processor and memory resources. If the rise in CPU began during a scan, close apps you do not need and let the scan complete before deciding that the software is malfunctioning. For a slow scan, Microsoft recommends restarting the PC and running the scan before opening other programs. Full scans can take longer when a disk contains many files or large archives. Microsoft’s Windows Security guidance explains the available Defender scan options.

Make sure the antivirus definitions and application are current. Microsoft’s enterprise guidance recommends updating third-party antivirus definitions first, then updating the product if the issue continues. If Microsoft Defender reports scan errors, check Windows Update and install current protection updates when needed. The exact update controls vary by antivirus vendor.
3. Review recent security-setting changes
Consider whether high CPU use started after changing a protection mode, policy, or other security setting. Microsoft notes that hardened or aggressive modes can increase resource use or cause compatibility problems. If this is a work- or school-managed device, do not change a policy yourself; ask the administrator or antivirus vendor to review it.

4. Run a malware scan if there are other warning signs
Slowness can have many causes and is not proof of infection. If you also have reasons to suspect malware, use your antivirus’s scan controls and follow its instructions for interpreting results.
Microsoft Defender on Windows
Open Windows Security and choose Virus & threat protection. Select Quick scan for a faster check, or choose Scan options to select a deeper scan. Microsoft describes Microsoft Defender Offline as its most complete scan option. Availability and exact labels can vary by Windows version.

Windows Security can also show which security provider is active. Microsoft says Defender Antivirus normally returns to active mode after a non-Microsoft antivirus product is uninstalled. That is not a reason to uninstall your current protection as an initial CPU troubleshooting step.
5. Avoid broad exclusions or turning protection off
An antivirus exclusion can stop specified files, folders, file types, or processes from receiving some checks. In Microsoft Defender, excluded content is no longer checked by real-time protection; the effect on scheduled or on-demand scans can differ by exclusion type. Microsoft warns that exclusions can leave files or data more vulnerable and says, “Adding antivirus exclusions should always be the last resort if no other option is feasible.” Microsoft Support’s exclusion guidance recommends treating them as a last resort.

Do not add broad exclusions or disable protection simply to lower CPU use. Consider a narrow exclusion only when the cause is established, the antivirus vendor or administrator agrees it is appropriate, and you understand which checks will no longer apply.

If the issue remains after updates and a settings review, contact the antivirus vendor with the process name, when the CPU increase occurs, and what troubleshooting you have already tried. For a managed device, involve the administrator. Product-specific diagnosis is important because controls and behavior differ across antivirus applications.
