If Android Auto can’t connect or stay connected, start by checking whether your phone and car support the connection type you’re using. For USB problems, test a short, reliable data cable and the ports; for wireless problems, check pairing and keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on. Then check the car’s Android Auto setting and update the relevant software. These steps help narrow down the cause, but no single fix applies to every connection, lag, or audio problem.

Before troubleshooting: park and identify the connection

Do not change phone settings or troubleshoot while driving. Park the vehicle first; Google’s setup guidance also says the car should be in park with its infotainment system on. Menu names and procedures vary, so consult the vehicle manual when needed. (Google’s Android Auto setup instructions)

Note your phone model and Android version, the vehicle or head-unit make and model, and whether you connect by USB or wirelessly. A USB port by itself does not establish that a vehicle supports Android Auto. Check compatibility for both the phone and car or stereo before treating a failed connection as a fault.

Check compatibility for the mode you use

  • Wired: Google lists Android 9.0 or higher, an active data plan, a compatible car, and a high-quality USB cable as requirements.
  • Wireless: Google lists a compatible phone with an active data plan and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support, plus a compatible car or stereo. Wireless setup also uses Bluetooth pairing.

See Google’s compatibility and setup guidance for current details; support varies by phone, vehicle, and head unit.

If Android Auto will not connect or stay connected over USB

Test the cable and ports

  1. Unlock the phone and connect it directly to the car—without a USB hub or extension.
  2. Inspect the phone and car USB ports for debris or visible damage. Do not force a connector into a port.
  3. Try a known-good, high-quality USB data cable shorter than 1 metre (3 feet). A cable must support data, not just charging.
  4. If Android Auto worked reliably before and then stopped, try replacing the cable. Google’s troubleshooting guidance says in that specific situation a cable replacement will likely fix the issue.

Google recommends a phone-manufacturer cable or an independent cable meeting USB-IF standards. A short cable that works for data with your phone and car is a more useful test than assuming any charging cable will work. (Google’s USB troubleshooting guidance)

Check the vehicle’s Android Auto setting

Confirm Android Auto is enabled in the infotainment settings, then restart the infotainment system. If you use an aftermarket receiver, check the receiver maker’s support information for firmware updates. The available menu and restart procedure depend on the vehicle or receiver. AAWireless Two – Wireless Android Auto Adapter – Convert Factory Wired Android Auto to Wireless – Bluetooth & Wi-Fi Auto Connect – Easy Plug & Play – Multifunction Button – Made in Europe
  • Compatible with wired-only Android Auto systems
  • Requires Android 11+
  • Multifunctional button for easy phone pairing and switching
  • Connects unlimited phones, perfect for road trips
  • Plug & play setup, no tech skills needed

If wireless Android Auto fails to connect or drops

Repeat the pairing setup

With the car parked and its infotainment system on, follow the vehicle’s pairing instructions. Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled during setup; wireless Android Auto uses Bluetooth pairing. Check that both the phone and car or stereo support wireless Android Auto, rather than assuming wired support means wireless support. (Google’s wireless setup guidance)

Compare wireless with USB, if supported

If your car supports both modes, try a direct USB connection after noting what happens wirelessly. If USB works while wireless does not, that comparison helps narrow troubleshooting toward the wireless setup, but it does not prove the root cause. Likewise, a failure in both modes does not by itself identify which component is responsible.

When Android Auto connects but lags, stutters, or has audio problems

First identify what is actually affected: connection stability, screen response, navigation, or audio. A delayed display, a navigation issue, and wireless audio stutter may have different causes. Compare the same phone in another compatible car, or another phone in the same car, if you can do so safely while parked. These comparisons can help isolate where to investigate; they are clues, not proof of a specific fault.

A dated example illustrates why version-specific advice needs context: on 5 December 2024, Android Auto Team Community Specialist Anubhav said a fix had been implemented for a reported wireless audio-stuttering issue and recommended Android Auto 13.2 or above. That was guidance for that particular report at that time, not current version advice and not evidence that all lag or stuttering has the same cause. (Android Auto community thread)

Update software without installing an unnecessary app

Install available updates for Android Auto and Google Play services through their official update channels, then retest the connection. Google’s current help pages describe Android Auto as integrated into phones; you do not necessarily need to install a separate Android Auto app to use the car display. (Google’s Android Auto troubleshooting guidance)

What to include when asking for support

If the basic checks do not resolve the problem, contact the vehicle or head-unit maker about compatibility and infotainment firmware, or use Google’s support channels for Android Auto. Include the phone model; Android, Android Auto, and Google Play services versions; connection type; vehicle or head-unit model; country; and the symptom you reproduced.
