Recommended Free Tools
If an Android app crashes, freezes, or runs poorly on your Chromebook, start by restarting the Chromebook, checking its internet connection, and clearing that app’s data and cache. If the trouble persists in one app, contact its developer. For broader Chromebook slowness, check for ChromeOS updates and free storage; first confirm that your Chromebook supports Android apps and that an administrator has not restricted them.
Try the app-specific fixes first
Google’s recommended first steps for an Android app that will not open, crashes, or otherwise misbehaves are simple and non-destructive. Try them in this order:
- Turn the Chromebook off and on again. A restart is Google’s first recommended step for an Android app problem.
- Check the internet connection. Reconnect to a working network and see whether the app or Google Play Store behaves differently.
- Clear the affected app’s data and cache. Google recommends this for apps that will not open or crash. The settings labels and route can vary by ChromeOS version, so use the app settings available on your device rather than relying on a universal click path. Clearing data may remove information stored locally by the app; check the app’s own guidance if you need to preserve it.
If the same app still fails after these steps, Google Play Help says, “The app developer is the best place to go if an app isn’t working properly.” Google’s Android app troubleshooting guidance explains the initial steps.
Check whether your Chromebook supports the app
Android app support is not available on every Chromebook model. To check, open Settings → Apps → Manage Google Play preferences. If that option is missing, Google says the Chromebook does not support Android apps. See Google’s guide to installing and using Android apps on a Chromebook.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
App behavior can also differ from an Android phone or tablet. For example, a touch-focused app may be awkward to use on a Chromebook without a touchscreen. That difference can affect usability, but it does not by itself establish why an app is crashing.
Check for school or work restrictions
On a managed Chromebook, an administrator may prevent users from adding Google Play or downloading Android apps. If the Play Store is unavailable or app installation is blocked on a school or work device, ask its administrator rather than trying to bypass the restriction.

If the Chromebook itself is slow, check updates and storage
If several apps are sluggish—or the Chromebook is slow outside Android apps as well—check the device, not just one app.
Check for a ChromeOS update
Open Settings → About ChromeOS → Check for updates. If an update is available, install it and restart to complete the update. Google provides the steps in its ChromeOS update guide. If update controls are managed by your school or workplace, contact the administrator.

Look at available storage
Low storage may cause problems using Android apps. Chromebook storage management includes Android storage; remove files or apps you no longer need and review the other cleanup options in Google’s guide to freeing up space. Suggested options include deleting unneeded files, clearing browsing data and download history, removing unused apps, and removing extra local user accounts. Choose only cleanup steps that will not delete information you need.
When several apps or ChromeOS are freezing
A single malfunctioning Android app is different from a Chromebook-wide freeze or crash. If the problem affects the whole device or multiple apps, Google’s general system guidance recommends restarting, closing apps and browser windows, and uninstalling recently added apps or extensions. Follow its hardware and system troubleshooting guide for the wider device issue.

Do not jump to device recovery to fix one Android app. Recovery is a last resort for persistent Chromebook-level problems, not a routine app troubleshooting step.
Understand the risk before recovery
Google says Chromebook recovery permanently erases everything on the device’s hard drive. Back up files first if possible, and use recovery only when the broader device problem warrants it. Google’s system troubleshooting guidance covers escalation options.

Do not opt into extended updates as an app fix
Eligible Chromebook models released before 2021 may be offered extended updates, but opting in removes Android apps and the Google Play Store, and the choice cannot be reversed. Because eligibility is model-specific and the change removes the feature you are trying to use, it is not a remedy for Android app performance. Check Google’s extended updates support information before making any decision about updates.
