Start by separating a power problem from a connection problem: test the controller with a suitable USB cable, then troubleshoot wireless pairing or firmware based on what works. A controller that connects by cable but not wirelessly points you toward pairing or host settings; failure on more than one cable and compatible device makes a hardware issue more plausible, but does not prove one.
1. Check power and identify the connection problem
Make sure the controller has power. If your model uses replaceable AA batteries and low power may be an issue, try fresh batteries. Some configurations use a rechargeable battery pack, so AA batteries are not a universal fix. Microsoft lists low battery as one possible cause of Bluetooth pairing or connection failure (Microsoft’s Windows Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance).
Connect the controller to the Xbox or PC with a USB cable that fits its port. Microsoft identifies both micro-USB and USB-C controller ports; use the connector that matches your controller. Check that the cable is firmly seated at both ends. If the controller works over USB but not wirelessly, focus on pairing and the target device’s wireless settings. If it does not work over USB, try another suitable cable and USB port, then another compatible host if available. These checks help narrow down the cause but are not a definitive hardware test (Microsoft’s controller update guidance).
2. Re-pair the controller with a Windows PC
Windows PCs can connect an Xbox controller through Bluetooth, Xbox Wireless, or USB. For Bluetooth, turn Bluetooth on in Windows, put the controller into pairing mode using its Pair button, and choose the controller in Windows Bluetooth device settings. Windows menu names can vary by release, so look for the Bluetooth device-pairing controls rather than relying on one fixed menu label. See Microsoft’s PC connection guide.

If Bluetooth pairing fails, check that the controller is in pairing mode, close enough to the PC, and adequately powered. Microsoft lists distance, low battery, pairing mode, and possible driver, service, configuration, or update problems among the causes of Bluetooth connection trouble; these are possibilities, not a diagnosis of every controller issue (Microsoft Support).
If Bluetooth remains unreliable, USB is a useful way to test the controller or play wired. Xbox Wireless is another PC connection route; a dedicated Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows may be relevant when Bluetooth is the obstacle. 3. Check for a controller firmware update on Xbox
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
- Go to Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories.
- Select the controller and inspect its firmware or update option. If an update is offered, follow the on-screen instructions.
If the update fails or the controller still behaves unexpectedly, disconnect accessories and retry. Microsoft’s troubleshooting video recommends power cycling the console if needed: hold the Xbox button on the front of the console for 10 seconds until it shuts off, restart it, and check the update again (Microsoft’s controller update guidance).
If the update will not complete
- Try another USB cable that fits the controller’s port, and make sure it is firmly connected to both the console and controller.
- Allow the update time to finish rather than unplugging the controller mid-update.
- If needed, try the Xbox Accessories app on a Windows PC.
Microsoft’s guidance covers controllers with micro-USB and USB-C ports; match the cable to your model. The available guidance does not establish a current firmware version number.

4. Decide whether the controller may need repair
If the controller fails over both USB and wireless, test it with a known suitable cable, another USB port, and another compatible host where possible. Continued failure across those checks makes a controller hardware fault more plausible, but these at-home checks do not prove one. Review Xbox support or warranty options before buying a replacement. Xbox Support says it can help replace a broken controller when troubleshooting does not resolve the issue (Xbox Support controller warranty and replacement information).
