Start with the checks that are safe and useful across most PC games: restart the PC and launcher, install available Windows and component-driver updates, verify the game files in its launcher, and close non-essential applications. Then match the fix to the symptom—failure to launch, a crash during play, or stuttering. Because no specific game or PC is identified here, there is no universal launch option or graphics preset to recommend; compare your computer with that game’s official system requirements, too. Steam’s general launch troubleshooting notes that problems can have different causes across hardware and software configurations.

What to check first

  1. Restart the PC and game launcher. This is a sensible first check before changing settings or reinstalling anything.
  2. Compare your PC with the game’s official system requirements. Check the CPU, graphics card, memory, operating system, and any storage requirements listed by the developer or publisher. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee smooth performance; a system near or below them may have launch or performance problems, as Steam’s guidance cautions.
  3. Install available Windows and component-driver updates. Prioritize the drivers relevant to your system, such as graphics, audio, and chipset drivers, using the PC or component maker’s official update method. Steam identifies outdated component drivers as one possible reason for poor performance; this does not establish that a driver is the cause in your case. Avoid third-party driver-updater utilities.
  4. Verify the game’s installed files in its store launcher. This can check for damaged or missing content without immediately reinstalling the whole game. Use the launcher’s own documented file-repair option; Steam’s exact steps are below.
  5. Close non-essential applications and retry. Background software can interfere with performance or a game’s launch. Steam recommends closing unnecessary applications and removing unneeded startup programs when troubleshooting performance.

Repair game files in Steam

In the Steam desktop app, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, select Installed Files, and click Verify integrity of game files. Steam says verification can help when files are missing or a game crashes; it may take several minutes. Steam’s verification instructions also explain that one or more files may fail to verify normally when they are local configuration files that should not be replaced.

If you use Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store, or another launcher, use that launcher’s supported repair or verification feature instead. After verification finishes, retry the game and note whether the original symptom changes.

If the game will not launch

Check whether the launcher reports an error

Write down the exact message rather than relying on a general description such as “it does nothing.” Note whether the game closes before a window appears, reaches a loading screen, or fails at a particular step. That information helps distinguish a launch failure from a crash after the game starts.

Look for a missing executable alert

If Steam reports “Missing Executable,” inspect your security software’s detection or quarantine history. Antivirus software can mistakenly quarantine a game file, according to Steam’s missing-executable guidance. Before restoring or allowing a file, confirm that the alert refers to the legitimate game installation and that the file came from the game’s official launcher. If you do make a security exception, keep it limited to the confirmed game file or folder; do not broadly disable protection.

Consider what changed

If the problem began after a game update, verify the files first, then check the game’s current support page for a known issue or publisher-specific steps. 505 Games’ PC troubleshooting guidance recommends store-client file verification for post-update stuttering, crashes, or launch failures. It is a useful first check, not proof that the update damaged your files or a guaranteed fix.

If the game crashes during play

Verify the installation, update relevant drivers, and close non-essential applications before making more disruptive changes. If the crash occurs at the same point each time, record where it happens and any error text. If it began after an update, use the post-update checks above.

Pay attention to whether only the game closes or the entire PC becomes unstable. A full-system restart or blue screen is broader than an ordinary game crash; do not assume the game alone is responsible. Record exactly what the PC did so that the next troubleshooting step is based on the symptom rather than the label “crash.”

If the game stutters or runs poorly

Test graphics changes one at a time

In the game’s video settings, lower or change one demanding option, play the same area or activity, and compare the result. Repeat only if needed, keeping track of which change helped. Steam notes that manually adjusting video options may improve FPS, but the best settings depend on the particular game and PC. There is no universal preset supported for every open-world RPG.

Check background activity

Close applications you do not need while playing, then see whether the stutter changes. If the problem appears only when other software is running, note which application was active. This is more informative than disabling several programs at once.

Check airflow if stuttering comes with signs of heat

If slowing or stuttering precedes a crash or restart, heat is one possibility worth checking. Steam’s hardware performance guidance identifies poor ventilation and dust on vents, fans, or heatsinks as potential contributors to overheating. Check that vents are unobstructed and the PC has room for airflow; inspect for dust and clean it using an appropriate method for your device. Do not buy cooling parts based on stuttering alone: establish that cooling is the issue first.

What you observe Useful next check What it does—and does not—tell you
Game fails before reaching its menu Capture the exact error, verify files, check requirements and available updates. A launch failure has multiple possible causes; one symptom does not identify a single fix.
Game closes during play Verify files, close unnecessary applications, and note where the crash occurs. File verification can help with missing or damaged content, but cannot establish that files caused the crash.
Stuttering started after a game update Verify files and consult the game’s current support information. This is a supported first check, not confirmation that the update is at fault.
Slowing or stuttering comes before a crash or restart Check airflow, blocked vents, and dust; record whether only the game or the whole PC stops. Heat is a possibility to investigate, not a diagnosis from the symptom alone.
Steam says “Missing Executable” Check security-software quarantine and confirm the file’s source before restoring or allowing it. Quarantine is a known possible cause; verify that the file is legitimate before changing security settings.
Several games have problems or the PC restarts Record whether the issue affects other games or the whole system and seek PC-level support if it does. The scope suggests the issue may extend beyond one game, but does not identify the faulty component.
