If an OBS Media Source is black, start by checking the file path, source visibility and stacking order, then confirm the video is still playing and looping. Test the picture in OBS preview and a short local recording before changing YouTube settings: that shows whether the problem starts inside OBS or after the stream is sent.
1. Confirm the media file and source
- In OBS, select the intended Media Source in the Sources dock and open its properties.
- Check that the selected local file is the one you expect, then test it outside OBS if you are unsure it plays.
- Check the OBS preview while the source is selected. OBS lists support for video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. A supported extension does not guarantee that a particular file is valid or will decode correctly. OBS Project: Media Sources
If the selected file does not play outside OBS, resolve the file or playback issue first. If it plays there but not in OBS, continue with the source and scene checks below.
2. Check visibility, stacking and placement
- Visibility: In the Sources dock, make sure the eye icon for the Media Source is enabled.
- Stacking: OBS displays sources listed higher in the dock above sources listed below them. An image, color source, browser source or other item above the video may cover it. Temporarily hide likely overlaps or move the Media Source higher to test. OBS Project: Sources Guide
- Canvas placement: Check that the source is within the scene canvas and sized so its picture is visible. A source positioned outside the visible area can appear absent even while playback runs.
3. Check whether playback ended or stopped looping
A finite clip that has finished playing may leave an empty source. OBS’s Media Source Loop option defaults to off. The Restart playback when source becomes active option defaults to on, but restarting on activation is not the same as looping continuously. Show nothing when playback ends defaults to on. Inspect these options in the Media Source properties and watch the preview through the end of the clip. OBS Project: Media Sources

For a single compatible local file, the built-in Media Source is the simpler choice. If you need a playlist or extended media support, consider VLC Video instead:

- Match the architecture: OBS states that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add a VLC Video source and configure its playlist. Its Loop Playlist option defaults to on.
VLC Video uses VLC libraries for extended media support and requires VLC to be installed. It is an alternative for playlists, not a guaranteed fix for every file or black-screen cause. OBS Project: Media Sources
4. Locate where the picture disappears
Compare the image at each stage rather than assuming the YouTube stream key or encoder caused a black source. Make a short local recording, then check the Live Control Room preview and the public watch page. YouTube recommends testing representative audio and movement, watching stream health and its messages, and checking that local archive files are growing. YouTube Help: YouTube live streaming tips

| What you see | Next check |
|---|---|
| Black in OBS preview | Recheck the file, visibility, source order, canvas placement and playback/loop settings. |
| Correct in preview, black or missing in local recording | Check the recording output and whether the affected source is included in the scene being recorded. |
| Correct in OBS and local recording, but not in Live Control Room | Check YouTube stream configuration, stream health and any messages in Live Control Room. |
| Correct in Live Control Room, but wrong on the public watch page | Check the public stream itself and allow for differences between the control-room preview and viewer playback; use YouTube’s stream-health messages as a clue. |
This comparison is a practical fault-isolation method, not a guarantee that any one boundary identifies a single cause.
5. Investigate performance only when the symptoms fit
GPU resources are used for scene compositing and rendering. If OBS reports encoding overload, or the output is choppy, delayed or dropping frames, reduce unnecessary sources and filters and use media at a resolution appropriate for the scene. OBS’s performance guidance addresses rendering and encoding workload; a black Media Source by itself does not establish GPU overload. OBS Project: Encoding Performance Troubleshooting

6. Keep 24/7 stream settings and archives in perspective
YouTube’s encoder recommendations depend on codec, resolution and frame rate. For H.264, its current guidance lists 5 Mbps at 1080p/30fps and 6 Mbps at 720p/60fps as recommended bitrates. It also specifies H.264, H.265 or AV1 video options; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR bitrate encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not guaranteed fixes for a black Media Source. Check the current guidance for the resolution and frame rate you actually use: YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
For a long-running stream, maintain a local recording plan and verify that the recording file continues to grow. YouTube says it can automatically archive streams under 12 hours, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all; it recommends a local archive backup. The 12-hour limit concerns archive capture, not the cause of a black image in OBS. YouTube Help: Archive live streams

Separately, YouTube notes that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. That is a viewer navigation limitation, distinct from both archive capture and source playback. YouTube Help: Turn on DVR on live streams
Common problems and fixes
- The video appears briefly, then the source goes black: Check whether playback reached the end and whether Loop is enabled.
- The file plays outside OBS but is absent in the scene: Check the eye icon, source order and canvas placement.
- A playlist will not play as expected: Use VLC Video if appropriate, confirm VLC is installed with the matching 64-bit architecture when using 64-bit OBS, and inspect the playlist entries.
- The OBS preview looks right but viewers see a problem: Compare a local recording with Live Control Room and the public watch page, then inspect YouTube stream health and messages.
- The picture is choppy or delayed rather than simply black: Check for encoding or rendering overload and reduce unnecessary scene workload before treating it as a file-visibility problem.
