If your iPad Pro won’t charge or turn on, first check its cable, power adapter, and power source. If those work, try a force restart using the sequence for your iPad’s buttons. Apple says a non-responsive iPad may need to charge for up to an hour. Don’t connect a cable if liquid may be in the charging port; seek service if these steps fail or the iPad appears damaged.
1. Check the charging setup
Connect the iPad Pro to a USB charging cable, preferably the one supplied with it, and plug the cable into a suitable power adapter connected to a working outlet. You can also use a supported USB port on an awake computer, a powered hub or dock, or a compatible powered Magic Keyboard. iPad Pro generations do not all use the same connector, so use a cable compatible with your exact model.
When the iPad is charging, Apple says you should see a lightning bolt on the battery icon or a large battery icon on the Lock Screen. If neither appears, try another compatible cable or adapter, changing one accessory at a time. Make sure accessories are in good condition and that the outlet or other power source works. Apple permits compliant third-party charging accessories; a damaged cable or adapter should not be used. See Apple’s charging troubleshooting steps.
2. Check temperature and moisture before continuing
Apple advises keeping the iPad within acceptable operating temperatures. If the iPad is unusually hot or cold, let it return to a suitable operating temperature before trying again; temperature alone does not establish what is causing a charging problem.

If liquid may be in the charging port, do not plug in a charging cable. Apple’s iPad battery charging guidance specifically warns against connecting a cable when liquid may be present in the port.
3. Force-restart the iPad Pro
Use the sequence that matches your iPad’s button layout. A force restart is a restart procedure; it does not identify or repair a hardware fault.

iPad Pro without a Home button
- Quickly press and release the volume button closest to the top button.
- Quickly press and release the other volume button.
- Press and hold the top button until the Apple logo appears or the iPad restarts.
iPad Pro with a Home button
- Press and hold the Home button and the top button (or side button).
- Keep holding until the Apple logo appears.
Apple’s button sequences are also available through iPad Support.
4. Give a non-responsive iPad time to charge
If the iPad still does not turn on, leave it connected to a working power source. Apple says a non-responsive iPad may need to charge for up to an hour before it turns on. This is a troubleshooting instruction, not a guarantee that charging will resolve the problem. Apple’s guidance for an iPad that doesn’t respond covers this step.

5. Try recovery-mode Update if startup is stuck
If the iPad powers on but remains stuck during startup, Apple’s non-responsive-device instructions explain how to connect it to a Mac or PC, enter recovery mode using the button sequence for the device, and select Update when the computer offers Update or Restore. Choose Update as the data-preserving option presented in Apple’s instructions; don’t choose Restore casually. If Update does not resolve the issue, contact Apple Support.

Do not continue troubleshooting with a device that appears physically damaged or whose battery may be damaged. Apple’s safety guide says, “If you suspect damage to iPad or the battery, discontinue use of iPad, as it may cause overheating or injury.” Contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for service rather than attempting an unsupported internal repair. If the iPad remains unable to charge or turn on after the checks above, Apple says service may be needed. The cause cannot be determined from these symptoms alone; a battery, port, or other internal fault requires inspection. Service availability, coverage, and cost depend on the device and region.
