Then reseat the cable and test a different port. If that does not solve it, swap the cable, cross-test the source and TV, and temporarily bypass any receiver or soundbar. This sequence helps identify which part of the setup needs attention before you buy parts or arrange service.
Fix a TV that does not detect an HDMI device
Try these checks in order. TV menu labels and device settings vary by model, so use the instructions for your equipment if a setting is not available.
- Turn on and wake the source. Confirm that the connected device is powered on. If it is a computer, wake it from sleep or hibernation. Some streaming players may not receive enough power even when an indicator light is on; Roku recommends using the supplied power adapter where possible. Roku’s troubleshooting guidance covers player power and connection checks.
- Select the TV’s matching HDMI input. On the TV remote, press Input, Source, or the equivalent control and choose the HDMI number printed beside the port where the cable is connected. If you move the cable to another port, select that port’s input too. Pause briefly on the selected input while the TV detects video.
- Reseat the cable at both ends. Make sure the HDMI cable is firmly connected to the source and TV. If the connection still fails, move the cable to another TV HDMI port and select that input. Samsung’s Singapore procedure is to disconnect power from the TV and source for at least 10 seconds, reconnect HDMI first at the source and then at the TV, and try another TV port if needed. Follow your own devices’ manuals rather than assuming every model uses the same procedure. Samsung Singapore’s HDMI guidance.
- Test a known-good cable. Swap in another high-speed HDMI cable. Samsung recommends trying a different high-speed, high-quality cable. If you use 4K or HDR, check the requirements for the source, TV, and every device in between; an older cable or connection path may not support the mode you selected. Samsung’s U.S. troubleshooting guide.
- Cross-test the source and TV. Connect another HDMI device to the same TV port using a cable you know works. Then, if possible, connect the original source to another TV. These comparisons help show whether the problem follows the source, stays with a TV port, or changes with a cable. If another device works on the TV, the original source or its output settings may be responsible. If only one TV port fails with known-working devices and cables, contact the TV manufacturer about service.
- Bypass a receiver or soundbar. If the source connects through an AV receiver or soundbar, connect it directly to the TV temporarily. A device in the middle may not pass the signal in some setups. If direct connection works, check that intermediary’s selected input and its model-specific video passthrough capabilities. Sony’s no-picture HDMI guidance discusses checking connected equipment and the signal path.
- Check the source’s output format. If the TV recognizes a connection but still cannot show a usable image, confirm that the source’s resolution and display format are supported by the TV. Use the source manual or manufacturer instructions to change its output if necessary. For applicable Roku players, automatic display-type selection may help; a 4K/HDR setup also requires compatible devices and HDCP 2.2 support along the relevant connection path. Exact requirements depend on the models. Roku’s 4K and HDR guidance.
- Check for TV software updates. Samsung includes checking for Smart TV software updates in its HDMI detection troubleshooting. Look in your TV’s settings or manual for the update path for your model. Samsung’s U.S. guide.
Use the test results to find the failing part
| What happens | What it suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The picture appears after selecting another HDMI input. | The TV was set to a different input from the physical port in use. | Leave the TV on the input that matches the connected port. |
| The original source fails, but another device works on the same TV port and cable. | The source device or its output settings may be at fault. | Check its power, display output, and manufacturer instructions; contact the source maker if it continues to fail. |
| The original source works on another TV, but devices fail on one TV port. | The TV port or its settings may be at fault. | Try any remaining TV ports, then contact the TV manufacturer if the failure stays with that port. |
| A different cable fixes the picture. | The original cable or its support for the selected signal mode may be the issue. | Use a cable suited to the source, TV, and any required 4K/HDR format. |
| Direct connection to the TV works, but connection through the receiver or soundbar does not. | The intermediary’s input selection or signal passthrough may be involved. | Check the intermediary’s manual for the correct input and supported signal formats. |
| The TV detects the connection but cannot display the source’s output. | The source’s resolution or display format may not be supported by the TV or the full signal path. | Set a supported output format and verify any model-specific compatibility requirements. |
When to contact support or arrange service
Stop replacing parts at random once cross-testing points to a particular device. If the failure follows the source to another TV, contact the source-device manufacturer. If known-working sources and cables fail only on a particular TV port, ask the TV manufacturer about service. Samsung’s guidance likewise escalates to service if its troubleshooting checks do not resolve the problem. Samsung Support.
