If Explorer.exe shows a memory read/write application error after you choose Shut down or Restart from the Start button’s right-click menu or the Windows+X menu, Microsoft documents that specific error as harmless: shutdown continues, and the message can be ignored. To avoid it, shut down or restart from Windows Settings. Other Explorer errors need to be diagnosed from their exact message, timing, and event details.
First, check whether this is the specific shutdown error Microsoft documents
The documented case occurs when you open the Start button’s power-user menu by right-clicking Start or pressing Windows+X, then choose a shutdown or sign-out option. Microsoft says Explorer.exe tries to access memory that has already been freed during shutdown. The shutdown process continues, and the error does not harm the computer or require a repair. Microsoft’s guidance applies to supported versions of Windows Client.
- Trigger: You selected the power action from the Start/Windows+X menu.
- Timing: The message appeared as Windows was shutting down or restarting.
- Result: The shutdown or restart proceeded despite the message.
- Message: It is the Explorer.exe application error involving a memory read or write.
If those details match, use the workaround below. If the error appears at another time, the machine does not shut down, or the message is different, do not assume this explanation applies.
Use Settings to shut down or restart
For the documented error, Microsoft’s workaround is to use Settings instead of the Start/Windows+X power-user menu:

- Open Start and select Settings.
- In Windows 11, select System, then Power. In Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Power & sleep.
- Choose the available shutdown or restart option from Settings.
Microsoft’s article recommends shutting down or restarting through Settings; the precise Settings layout can vary by Windows version. If your Settings page does not offer a power action, use another standard Windows shutdown method rather than editing the registry or removing system files.
If the message is different or shutdown does not complete
Record the exact wording and when it appears before trying repairs. Note your Windows edition, version and build, recent Windows updates or software changes, and whether the PC eventually shuts down. For a broader Explorer or shell failure, Microsoft’s File Explorer troubleshooting guidance points to Event Viewer.

- Right-click Start and open Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs, then select Application.
- Look for Explorer-related events near the time the error occurred. Record the event details and timestamp.
Those details can help distinguish a shutdown-time message from a separate Explorer crash. Microsoft’s startup troubleshooting guidance also describes using logs and clean-start methods to isolate problematic services. It does not establish a general third-party cause for the specific freed-memory shutdown error.
When to run DISM and System File Checker
Use system-file checks only if you have reason to suspect Windows image or system-file corruption; they are not Microsoft’s stated direct fix for the documented shutdown-time memory error. Microsoft’s recommended order is to install Windows updates and restart, then run DISM followed by SFC:

sfc /scannowand let the scan finish.
See Microsoft’s instructions for using DISM and System File Checker to repair Windows system files. These tools address suspected file corruption; do not treat them as a guaranteed solution to this particular shutdown message.
Keep a sign-in or desktop-loading problem separate
An Explorer crash after sign-in is not the same symptom as a memory error triggered by choosing shutdown from the power-user menu. Microsoft’s page for the September 2026 Windows 11 security update describes a separate desktop-loading issue associated with certain preceding updates and environments. Reported symptoms can include a black screen after sign-in and Explorer crashes in Application logs. For that scenario, Microsoft describes launching explorer.exe from Task Manager as a temporary workaround; enterprise-managed environments may use the documented Known Issue Rollback. Check the device’s Windows version and update history against Microsoft’s September 2026 update information. That issue does not establish the cause of a shutdown-specific freed-memory error.

When to get further help
If the shutdown-specific message does not match, shutdown repeatedly fails, or Event Viewer shows a different Explorer crash, use the event details and Windows build to guide the next troubleshooting step. Seek Microsoft support if the failure persists. Avoid registry edits, deleting system files, or third-party cleaner utilities unless a verified, specific cause calls for them.
