Start by confirming that your computer’s exact port supports an eGPU, then check the direct cable connection and enclosure power before changing drivers. If the enclosure is detected but the graphics card or an application is not using it, troubleshoot those separately: enclosure detection, GPU detection, application selection, and display routing are different steps.

First confirm that your computer supports this eGPU connection

Write down the computer model, operating system, exact port in use, enclosure model, and graphics card. Then check the computer maker’s specifications for that model and port. A USB-C-shaped socket alone does not establish Thunderbolt or eGPU support. NVIDIA, for example, says its USB-C port is not compatible with external graphics products: NVIDIA Support.

For a Mac, Apple’s published eGPU requirements cover Intel Macs with Thunderbolt 3 running macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 or later. Apple lists supported AMD GPU families and enclosure combinations by macOS version, so check the compatibility guidance for the particular Mac, OS, card, and chassis rather than assuming any card that fits will work: Apple’s eGPU compatibility guidance. These requirements should not be generalized to all Mac hardware.

Check the enclosure’s power and the direct cable path

  1. Make sure the enclosure is plugged into working wall power and its power switch is on, if it has one. Check that the GPU’s required power leads are connected.
  2. Connect the enclosure directly to a port verified to support the eGPU connection. For initial troubleshooting, remove docks, adapters, and other devices from the path.
  3. Use the cable supplied with the enclosure or another cable certified for the required Thunderbolt connection. A cable that fits a USB-C port may not support the necessary specification. Apple recommends the supplied cable or an Apple Thunderbolt 3 cable and a direct connection; MSI also recommends a certified cable. See Apple’s guidance and MSI’s Thunderbolt troubleshooting steps.
  4. If you need to reseat the graphics card, power down and follow the enclosure maker’s instructions. Do not open or handle powered components.

Do not connect or disconnect a Thunderbolt 3 eGPU while the computer is asleep or hibernating. Dell documents detection and other problems after docking or undocking an eGPU in those states: Dell’s support notice.

Tell whether the enclosure or the GPU is missing

Check two separate places in the operating system: the attached Thunderbolt-device list and the graphics-adapter list. Exact menu names vary by computer and OS, so use the manufacturer’s instructions for your model.

  • The enclosure is not listed: Recheck port support, direct connection, cable, enclosure power, and Thunderbolt drivers or firmware. If available, test another certified cable. Testing the enclosure on another compatible computer can help distinguish a host-side problem from an enclosure or cable fault; MSI recommends these isolation checks.
  • The enclosure is listed, but the GPU is not: Focus on enclosure power, GPU seating, GPU power leads, card-and-enclosure compatibility, host firmware, and graphics-device enumeration. Confirm the card is supported by the enclosure and operating system.
  • Both are listed: Detection is working; continue to the application and display checks below if performance is still disappointing.

MSI’s troubleshooting guide covers checking the laptop’s model specifications, cable, power, drivers, and firmware: MSI Thunderbolt device troubleshooting. For a NUC, ASUS has model-family-specific eGPU troubleshooting; its boot and display-path guidance should not be assumed to apply to other PCs: ASUS NUC eGPU troubleshooting.

Update software from the vendor responsible for it

After confirming the hardware path, check for updates that match the exact computer, enclosure, GPU, and operating system. Avoid installing a driver or firmware package simply because it is newer or mentions Thunderbolt; verify that the vendor lists it for your model.

  • Computer BIOS, Thunderbolt driver, and host firmware: Use the computer manufacturer’s support page for the exact model.
  • Enclosure firmware: Check the enclosure manufacturer’s support page.
  • Graphics driver: Follow the GPU vendor’s and computer manufacturer’s guidance for the platform and card.
  • Operating system: Check the system and enclosure maker’s stated requirements. Sonnet’s Windows 11 guide, for example, covers its described eGPU configurations and calls out current OS, BIOS, firmware, and GPU drivers; it is not a universal setup guide for every Windows system: Sonnet Windows 11 eGPU Setup Guide.

MSI likewise recommends checking the laptop Thunderbolt driver, BIOS or Thunderbolt firmware, and device firmware: MSI’s troubleshooting guide. Restart as directed by the relevant vendor after installing updates.

If the eGPU is detected but frame rates are low

Check which GPU the application actually uses

Seeing the card in the system does not mean every application is rendering on it. On supported Macs, Apple notes that some apps select their own graphics processor and ignore the “Prefer External GPU” setting. Check the application’s own graphics or performance settings and its documentation; the system preference is not a guarantee that a particular app will switch GPUs. Apple explains this behavior in its eGPU guidance.

Check where the display is connected

For a workload that can use an external display, connect that display to the eGPU and, on supported macOS versions, consider making it the main display before opening the application. Apple says apps generally use the GPU associated with the primary display and documents the supported display setup in its Mac eGPU instructions. Display routing and available options differ across platforms; do not assume this Mac behavior describes every PC.

Compare performance under matching conditions

There is no universal frame-rate gain that can be promised for an eGPU. Results depend on the host, graphics card, application, resolution, display connection, and configuration. To assess a specific setup, compare the same application and scene at the same resolution and settings, with the same display path, and confirm which GPU is active. Treat a benchmark as relevant only when its system and test conditions match yours; the cited compatibility guidance does not establish a general FPS figure.

Check platform-specific limitations before changing hardware

  • Apple says eGPUs are not supported in Windows through Boot Camp under the macOS High Sierra 10.13.4-and-later eGPU guidance, and are unavailable in macOS Recovery or during system updates. See Apple’s support page.
  • Apple lists supported GPU architectures and chassis by macOS version. Treat those lists as compatibility requirements for the specified Mac setup, not as general approval for other systems or every currently sold product.
  • Any enclosure or GPU replacement must match the host connection and operating-system support, the enclosure’s card dimensions and power capacity, the card’s power requirements, and the intended display and application setup. A new cable or enclosure cannot fix an unsupported host port or an application that chooses another GPU.
