If your AirPods seem to disconnect from your iPhone, first check whether they have actually lost connection or are switching audio to another Apple device. Then work through the basics—iPhone software, charging, Bluetooth, and selecting AirPods as the audio output—before restarting, re-pairing, or resetting them. Apple installs AirPods firmware updates automatically when its stated conditions are met.
Check whether AirPods are switching to another Apple device
AirPods can automatically switch among supported Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. If you use a Mac, iPad, or Apple Watch, audio may have moved there rather than the AirPods losing their connection to your iPhone. An incoming call or playback on another device can also change the audio destination.
On your iPhone, open Settings, tap your AirPods near the top of the screen, then open Connect to This iPhone and choose When Last Connected to This iPhone. The precise path can vary with iOS version. See Apple’s guide to switching AirPods between Apple devices.
Check the iPhone and the basic connection
- Update iOS. Install the latest iOS version available for your iPhone.
- Check charging. Put both AirPods in the case and confirm that they are charging.
- Check Bluetooth. Make sure Bluetooth is on in iPhone settings.
- Select AirPods as the audio output. Remove the AirPods from the case, open Control Center, tap the audio or AirPlay device list, and select your AirPods.
- Test playback and volume. Play audio and confirm the iPhone volume is audible.

Restart AirPods, then pair them again
Restart AirPods or AirPods Pro
Put both earbuds in the charging case and close the lid for at least 10 seconds. Then open the case and reconnect them to the iPhone.
Forget and reconnect AirPods
If restarting does not help, open Settings on the iPhone, tap your AirPods, and choose Forget This Device. Pair the AirPods again. Apple’s pairing instructions call for closing the case lid for 15 seconds before beginning the pairing process; follow the on-screen steps for your model. Reset only if simpler steps fail
A factory reset is a later step, after restarting or unpairing has not restored normal operation. The procedure depends on the model and case controls, so identify your AirPods first and follow the matching Apple instructions.

Because controls differ, check Apple’s reset instructions for your exact model before starting.

Let AirPods firmware update automatically
Apple says AirPods firmware updates install automatically; there is no manual update button. For AirPods or AirPods Pro, meet these conditions:
- Update the paired iPhone or other Apple device and turn on Bluetooth.
- Connect that device to Wi-Fi.
- Connect the charging case to power using a cable compatible with the case.
- Put the AirPods in the case, close the lid, and keep them within Bluetooth range of the Apple device.
- Wait at least 30 minutes, then open the case to reconnect and check the firmware version.
For AirPods Max, connect them to power by cable and keep them within Bluetooth range of the paired Apple device while waiting. These are Apple’s update conditions, not a guarantee that firmware is the cause of a dropout or that a cable will fix disconnections. See Apple’s AirPods firmware update instructions.

When to contact Apple Support
If the problem continues after the applicable restart, re-pairing, reset, and firmware steps, contact Apple Support for model-specific help. The symptoms alone do not establish whether a particular iPhone or AirPods set has a hardware fault, and they do not show that replacement is necessary.
