If only movies or videos with AC-3 audio are silent, check codec and player support first. If all sound is gone, troubleshoot Windows, the audio driver, and audio services instead. Those symptoms point to different problems—and installing a codec will not fix system-wide sound loss.

First, identify what stopped working

Test a known-good audio file or play a system sound, then try the affected video in another player already installed on your PC. If other apps play sound but AC-3 media does not, focus on the file’s codec and the player. If every app is silent, follow the Windows audio troubleshooting steps below.

AC-3, also called Dolby Digital, is an audio codec used for multichannel sound. Microsoft says that Windows 11 version 24H2 no longer includes AC-3 by default. However, device manufacturers may preinstall the codec, and Microsoft says an upgrade to 24H2 from an earlier Windows version retains it. The change therefore does not mean every Windows 11 update removes AC-3 from every PC.

If only AC-3 files fail

Check your Windows installation and device support

Confirm your Windows version and whether Windows was clean-installed or upgraded from an earlier version. Then check your PC maker’s support information for your exact model and your media player’s documentation for AC-3 support. The available Microsoft guidance does not identify a universal standalone AC-3 download for affected systems, so avoid treating an unverified codec download or sideloading procedure as Microsoft’s official fix.

Test a different player or a compatible format

If the problem occurs in only one app, try another player whose documentation confirms AC-3 support. You can also use a reputable media conversion workflow to convert media you own to a format your intended player supports. Verify the software’s current codec support and licensing terms before using it; compatibility of any specific player is not established by Microsoft’s guidance.

Microsoft notes that some media formats require additional codecs and points to certain codec extensions in Microsoft Store. The extensions it lists are not an AC-3 solution, so installing one of them should not be presented as a fix for missing AC-3 decoding.

If all sound stopped after the update

Use Microsoft’s post-update troubleshooting sequence for system-wide audio loss. Restart after installing updates or changing the driver, then test sound before moving to the next step.

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update, check for updates, install any available updates, and restart the PC.
  2. Open Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers. Right-click or select your audio device, choose Update driver, follow the prompts, and restart.
  3. If general sound failed immediately after the update, open the audio device’s Properties > Driver tab and choose Roll Back Driver, if that option is available. Restart and test sound.
  4. Search for and open services.msc. Restart Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder, then test playback.

Do not roll back a driver just because AC-3 files stopped playing on 24H2. Microsoft documents the AC-3 inclusion change separately from its driver steps for audio that stops working after an update.

Check Windows sound settings

For broader audio trouble, Microsoft recommends starting the automated troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Also confirm Windows is sending sound to the intended output device and review that device’s sound settings. If audio enhancements are enabled, turn them off and test again; Microsoft notes that enhancements can sometimes cause audio problems. These checks address general output or processing issues, not a missing AC-3 decoder.

Choose a fix that matches the symptom

Symptom Best next step What it changes
Only AC-3 files fail Check Windows installation history, device-maker information, and the player’s AC-3 support; test another documented AC-3-capable player. Codec or player compatibility; does not repair system-wide audio.
One app fails, but other players work Check that app’s codec support or use a compatible player. App choice rather than Windows output or driver settings.
All sound stopped after the update Check Windows Update, update or—if the failure followed the update—roll back the audio driver, and restart Windows audio services. Windows, driver, or audio-service behavior.
Sound goes to the wrong device or processing sounds faulty Use Get Help, select the intended output, review its settings, and test with audio enhancements off. Output selection or audio processing; not AC-3 decoding.

Testing another player or output setting is easier to reverse than installing system-wide codec components. Follow the relevant PC maker’s or software developer’s support instructions when a device-specific fix is needed.
