How do I fix the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library error “abnormal program termination” in Windows 10? Start by identifying which program crashes and what action triggers the message. The dialog is a symptom, not a diagnosis: reports describe it in different applications, so there is no single fix that applies to every case.

What the error means—and what it does not

The message may appear in a dialog labeled “Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library,” followed by “Runtime Error!” and “abnormal program termination.” Similar wording has been reported in unrelated programs, including embroidery software and a business system connected to Windows 10. Those reports do not establish one common cause or a universal repair. Microsoft Q&A

Before changing Windows settings or reinstalling components, note the exact application name and, if shown, its program path. Record what you were doing when the dialog appeared and whether it happens every time. This helps determine whether to follow the app publisher’s guidance or investigate a possible conflict with other software.

Try these fixes in order

1. Check the application for an update or compatibility guidance

Visit the affected program’s publisher support page and check for an update or instructions specific to that application. For an older app without an update, Microsoft recommends trying the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. Follow the publisher’s guidance for the app and Windows version rather than assuming the runtime message identifies the remedy. 2. Repair the app if Windows offers the option

For apps that support it, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the app’s More options, then open Advanced options and select Repair if available. Some apps also offer Reset. For certain desktop programs, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features and look for Repair or Change. These controls are not available for every app. Microsoft: Repair apps and programs in Windows

3. Use a clean boot to test for background interference

A clean boot starts Windows with only essential drivers and startup programs, which can help reveal whether background software is interfering with the app. It is a diagnostic test, not a repair. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot steps in order, test the affected program, and then restore normal startup. If the app works during a clean boot, isolate the startup item or service causing the conflict. If it still fails, contact the app publisher with the program name, trigger, and error details. Microsoft cautions that clean-boot troubleshooting can temporarily reduce functionality and that extra care is appropriate on managed or networked devices. 4. Consider Visual C++ runtime repair only when the app’s guidance supports it

A historical Microsoft Q&A answer recommended reinstalling Visual C++ runtime components for one user’s case, but that does not make reinstalling them a current, general fix. Do not remove all Visual C++ packages or download runtimes from third-party sites based only on this dialog. First identify the application and follow current Microsoft or publisher instructions. The cited guidance does not establish a particular redistributable version as the universal solution. Microsoft Q&A

Which troubleshooting path should you choose?

Path What it checks Key qualification
Publisher update or compatibility guidance Whether the app needs an update or compatibility adjustment Use instructions for the specific program; Microsoft recommends checking the publisher and trying the Compatibility Troubleshooter for older apps. Microsoft guidance
Windows Repair or Reset Whether the app’s own installation or configuration can be repaired through Windows Only available when the app exposes the relevant control; Reset may be offered when Repair is absent or ineffective. Microsoft guidance
Clean boot Whether background software is interfering with the app Diagnostic rather than a repair; restore normal startup after testing. Microsoft guidance

Windows 10 support status

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. This lifecycle change is important for keeping a PC supported, but it does not explain why a particular app displays “abnormal program termination.” Microsoft: Windows 10 support ends on October 14, 2025
