First check whether WordPress says the theme update succeeded. If it did, but the site still looks unchanged, clear browser, plugin, and hosting caches, then confirm you are viewing the site and theme files you actually updated. If WordPress cannot find or install the update, check whether the theme author released one, review Site Health, and ask your host about connectivity or file permissions.

Start by identifying what “not updating” means

Open Dashboard > Updates and Appearance > Themes. Check whether an update was offered and whether WordPress reports that it completed. Theme updates are available when the theme author provides one; no update appearing does not necessarily mean WordPress is broken. See WordPress’s Work with themes documentation.

What you see Start with
WordPress reports success, but the public site looks the same Clear browser, plugin, and host or server caches; then verify the active theme and the file or location you changed.
No update is offered, or the update stalls or fails Confirm the theme author released an update, check update status and Site Health, then investigate connectivity and file access with your host if needed.

These symptoms have different causes: an old-looking page can be a display-cache issue even when the update succeeded, while an unavailable or failed update needs an update-path diagnosis.

If the update succeeded but the site looks unchanged

Clear each cache that could serve the old version

  1. Open the site in a fresh browser session or clear the browser cache. WordPress’s FAQ: I make changes and nothing happens recommends clearing the browser cache when changes do not appear.
  2. If a caching plugin is installed, use its cache-clearing control. WordPress does not include a cache by default, so caching may be supplied by a plugin or hosting service.
  3. Clear any cache managed by your host or server, if applicable. Then reload the site in the fresh browser session.

Confirm you changed the theme and location the site uses

Check the site address, active theme, template, and file location. A change to a different installation, theme, or copy of a file will not affect the page you are viewing. WordPress’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the source and location of the file being changed.

If you are testing a file edit, make a backup first and use a small, obvious, reversible change only as a controlled check. Do not use an unbacked-up edit as a routine update method.

If no update is offered or the update fails

Verify that an update is available

Check the theme author’s release information and documentation. WordPress can offer a theme update only when one has been made available through the update path used by that theme. If the author has not released an update, there is nothing for WordPress to install.

Check WordPress’s update status and Site Health

Review Dashboard > Updates and Appearance > Themes for the status or any error message. Then open Tools > Site Health and look for Cron or update-related errors. Theme and plugin automatic updates rely on WordPress Cron; Site Health can surface problems, including connectivity issues. Missing automatic-update controls can also depend on WordPress version or restrictions set by a host or plugin. WordPress explains these dependencies in Plugin and themes auto-updates.

Ask your host about server access or connectivity

If WordPress cannot reach WordPress.org, or cannot write the theme files, an update may fail. WordPress’s Dashboard Updates screen documentation covers common update errors; its Site Health screen documentation describes connectivity indicators.

Ask your hosting provider whether outbound requests are blocked and whether the web server has the required file ownership and permissions. These are server-level settings; do not change ownership or permissions blindly. WordPress’s Updating WordPress documentation discusses failed-update cleanup and file ownership. Back up before retrying an update.

Protect custom changes before another update

An update can overwrite edits made directly to a theme’s files. Make a restorable backup before updating, and put custom code in a child theme rather than the parent theme. For significant changes, test in a staging site when one is available. WordPress’s Theme Troubleshooting guidance covers backups, child themes, staging, and theme support resources.

When to contact the theme author

If WordPress reports that the update completed but the theme behaves differently or shows a theme-specific error, consult the theme’s documentation and support forum. If the problem is a failed connection, write access, or server cache, your host is the more relevant contact; include the exact update error and the result shown in Site Health.
