If your internet stops working when you connect to a VPN, first disconnect the VPN briefly and test the same sites or apps. If internet still fails, troubleshoot Wi-Fi, your router, or your internet service. If it works with the VPN off, investigate the VPN connection, network-specific restrictions, or other security software. The steps below cover Windows 10 and 11 and Apple devices; settings for other platforms and individual VPN apps vary by provider.
Find out whether the VPN is causing the problem
Compare the same device and the same apps or websites with the VPN connected and disconnected. Then check whether the problem affects everything or only one app or destination. If possible, connect to a different network and repeat the test. These comparisons help distinguish an underlying internet outage from a VPN-path, network, or app-specific problem, but they do not prove a single cause.
- No internet with the VPN off: Start with the Wi-Fi connection, router, or internet service rather than changing VPN settings.
- Internet works only with the VPN off: The VPN path or software interacting with network traffic is a stronger lead.
- Only one app or website fails: The issue may be specific to that app, destination, or a firewall rule, even if Wi-Fi shows as connected.
- The VPN works on another network: The original network may be involved; Apple recommends testing another network as a diagnostic step.
Apple notes that third-party security software that monitors or interacts with network connections can potentially block some connections, including internet access. See Apple’s VPN and third-party security software guidance.
Fix VPN-related internet problems on Windows 10 or 11
Start with Windows’ general connection checks. These steps can help with limited connectivity, but they are not guaranteed VPN-specific fixes. Microsoft’s full instructions are in Fix Wi-Fi connection issues in Windows.

- Check Wi-Fi and reconnect. Confirm Wi-Fi is enabled and the PC is connected to the intended network. Disconnect from the wireless network and reconnect; if needed, restart the router.
- Run the network troubleshooter. Use the Windows network troubleshooter to check for connection problems.
- Renew the IP configuration. Open Command Prompt and run
ipconfig /release, followed byipconfig /renew. - Clear the DNS cache. In Command Prompt, run
ipconfig /flushdns, then test the connection again. - Review proxy settings. Check whether a manual proxy is configured and whether it is required for your network. An unintended proxy can interfere with access.
- Check DNS reachability. Microsoft describes checking whether the configured DNS server can be reached and trying a different DNS server if the current one cannot be pinged. If this is a work device or network, ask IT before changing managed DNS settings.
Use network reset only as a later step
Windows network reset removes installed network adapters and resets their settings. Afterward, you may need to reinstall or set up the VPN client and other networking software again. Review Microsoft’s network reset guidance before using it, especially on a work-managed PC.
Check VPN and security settings on Apple devices
Apple recommends checking basic device and network conditions as well as software that filters or monitors connections. Follow the applicable steps for your iPhone, iPad, or Mac; labels and available controls can differ by device and software version.

- Confirm the date, time, and time zone are correct, install available system updates, and restart the device.
- If the connection still fails, restart the modem or router and test the device on a different network, if one is available.
- Review installed VPN, firewall, antivirus, parental-control, and content-blocking apps. An app other than the VPN may be affecting network traffic.
- Search Settings for VPN, profile, firewall, and filter to find related configuration.
Do not disable or remove settings that your organization requires. Apple advises users of managed devices to consult their organization before making changes. If you do not recognize a security or network app, contact its vendor. See Apple’s network connectivity guidance.
Know when to contact your VPN provider or workplace IT
Connection details depend on who manages the VPN. For a work VPN, Microsoft directs users to their organization for VPN settings and support. For a personal VPN, check the provider’s app or website for its connection settings. Microsoft’s overview is Connect to a VPN in Windows.

If general troubleshooting does not resolve an outage that occurs only with the VPN connected, send the relevant support team:
- Your device and operating-system version.
- The VPN app and its version, if available.
- Whether the VPN reports that it is connected and the exact error text.
- Whether internet access works with the VPN disconnected, and whether the problem affects all apps or only particular ones.
- Whether the same VPN behaves differently on another network.
Why a connected VPN can still leave apps offline
A VPN’s connected status does not establish that every app and destination can reach the internet. Routing, firewall behavior, and app-specific problems can produce different results across a device. Microsoft documents a specific forced-tunneling issue affecting Windows Store apps on Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2; an update or hotfix addressed that case. It is a historical, version-specific example, not a general fix for current Windows releases. Details are in Microsoft’s Windows Store app forced-tunneling article.
