On a Mac, check Disk Utility with View > Show All Devices before trying repairs: a drive missing from Finder may still be detected by macOS. Back up important files before using First Aid, and do not erase or reformat a drive that contains files you need.
1. Check the connection and USB power
A loose connection, USB port, or hub can prevent a computer from detecting a drive. Apple recommends reconnecting the device and trying a different port when troubleshooting USB power or disabled-device messages on a Mac. See Apple’s USB device troubleshooting guidance.
- Disconnect the flash drive, then reconnect it firmly.
- Try another USB port on the computer.
- If you are using a USB or Thunderbolt hub, connect the drive directly to the Mac. If the hub has its own power adapter, make sure it is plugged in.
If the drive is still missing, the next useful check depends on your computer. The steps below are for macOS; they are not Windows instructions.
2. On a Mac, check Disk Utility
A drive can be absent from Finder while its physical device or volume is still visible in Disk Utility. To check:

- Open Disk Utility.
- Choose View > Show All Devices.
- Look in the sidebar for the flash drive and any volumes listed beneath it.
If the drive appears here but not in Finder, macOS detects the storage device, so the issue is different from a drive that does not appear in Disk Utility at all. Apple explains the view and repair options in its Disk Utility repair guide.
3. Protect files before attempting repairs
If the drive contains important files, make a current backup of anything you can access before running a repair. Apple advises backing up before repair attempts because some disk problems may be beyond what Disk Utility can fix.

When First Aid may help
Disk Utility’s First Aid checks and repairs certain formatting and directory-structure errors. Apple cautions that Disk Utility cannot detect or repair every problem. If the drive is visible in Disk Utility, follow Apple’s instructions for running First Aid on the relevant volume, container, or device. Do not treat First Aid as a guarantee of recovery.
Do not erase a drive to make it appear
Erasing or reformatting destroys the drive’s existing contents. Apple describes erasing as an option in some cases where repair fails, but it is not a safe first step when you need the files. If the data matters and the drive is inaccessible, stop before erasing it and seek data-recovery advice.

4. If the drive is not listed in Disk Utility
After checking the connection, another port, and any hub or power adapter, look again in Disk Utility with all devices shown. Apple Support says, “If your storage device doesn’t appear in the sidebar of Disk Utility, your Mac or the storage device might need service.” The drive or Mac may need professional service; repeatedly attempting repairs or formatting will not make an undetected device safe to use.
5. If the drive is detected but files still will not open or save
Detection and filesystem compatibility are separate issues. Apple lists ExFAT and MS-DOS (FAT) as formats compatible with Windows, and says macOS may read NTFS drives but not write to them. A format mismatch can affect file access, but it does not mean you should reformat: formatting deletes existing contents. Windows users
This guidance verifies Mac-specific Disk Utility and USB-power steps; it does not establish Windows Disk Management, Device Manager, driver, or formatting procedures. Avoid applying the Mac menu path to Windows, and do not format the drive if you need its files.
