If a USB device keeps disconnecting and reconnecting, isolate the connection path before changing settings: test another compatible port, connect directly instead of through a hub or dock, and try a known-good cable. When and where the failure happens—during movement, heavy use, idle, sleep, or wake—helps narrow the cause. No single fix applies to every device or operating system.
First, narrow down when and where it disconnects
Note the device, operating system, and how it is connected. Then observe whether disconnections happen while the device is being moved, during heavy use, after sitting idle, or as the computer sleeps or wakes. These details help distinguish a connection-path problem from one that may involve power management or a device-specific issue; the symptom alone does not identify a cause.
- Does the problem affect this device only, or other USB devices too?
- Is it connected directly, or through a hub, dock, or adapter?
- Does the issue follow a particular port, cable, or computer?
Test the port and bypass any hub or dock
Connect the device to another compatible port on the computer. If it currently runs through a USB hub, Thunderbolt hub, dock, or adapter, connect it directly to the computer for a test. Apple recommends trying another port and connecting directly to the Mac when addressing USB recognition or power warnings. See Apple’s USB Devices Disabled troubleshooting.
If the device works when directly connected, the hub or another bypassed part of the setup may be involved, but that test alone does not prove which component is faulty. If it still disconnects, continue testing rather than assuming the computer port is the cause.

Inspect the connection and test a compatible cable
Unplug and firmly reseat both ends of the cable. Check the connector and port for visible damage or debris; do not force a connector that does not fit. If possible, test with a known-good cable compatible with the device’s data and power requirements.
For USB-C troubleshooting on Windows, Microsoft advises using the cable supplied by the device or dock manufacturer or a certified USB4 cable. Charging speed also depends on whether the cable and charger meet the PC’s power requirements. Consult Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance for warnings and device-specific steps.

- 24 months manufacturer warranty
- Supports fast 2A charging and 480 Mbps data transfer with 22 AWG low-impedance wires — safe, stable, and built for long-term performance
Try a compatible cable you already have before buying one. If you need a replacement, check the device or dock maker’s requirements for both data and power; a cable that physically fits may not support the capabilities your setup needs.
Use the symptom to choose the next check
| When it disconnects | Useful comparison | What the result can tell you |
|---|---|---|
| When the cable or device moves | Keep the computer and device the same; try another compatible cable and port without moving the setup unnecessarily. | If behavior changes, the cable or a connector/port in the path may be implicated. This does not identify a specific failed part. |
| During heavy use or when a power warning appears | Connect directly to the computer and compare with the hub or dock setup. | A change points toward something in the bypassed connection path, but is not by itself a diagnosis. |
| After idle, sleep, or wake | Note whether it occurs only around idle or resume, and identify the operating system before changing power settings. | Power-management behavior may be relevant; the right investigation differs by system and device. |
Windows: treat USB power settings as a careful diagnostic step
Windows USB selective suspend lets the system suspend an individual USB port to save power. Microsoft says it is enabled by default and strongly recommends not disabling it. Its selective suspend documentation is primarily aimed at driver developers, so changing the setting should not be the default response to a disconnect.

- Durable Design: Reinforced nylon exterior and a robust core ensure this cable withstands up to 5,000 bends, outlasting other brands
- Fast Charging: Supports Power Delivery for up to 60W high-speed charging when paired with a USB-C charger
- Versatile Compatibility: Works with virtually all USB-C devices, including phones, tablets, and laptops
- High-Speed Data Transfer: Transfer files quickly with 480Mbps data transfer speeds
- Included Accessories: Comes with a hook-and-loop cable tie for easy organization and a welcome guide for hassle-free setup
If the problem consistently appears around idle or resume, selective suspend can be one diagnostic avenue, but first check the device maker’s guidance and any Windows warning associated with the device. If you make a temporary setting change as a test, record the original setting and restore it if the test does not help. A change in behavior during that test is evidence to investigate, not proof that disabling the feature is a general fix.
If Windows displays a USB-C warning identifying a device or driver problem, follow the specific Device Manager error guidance linked from Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting page. Avoid generic driver-updater utilities; the documented guidance is to address the identified error.

- 6.6ft Freedom – No More Port Strain: Short 3FT cables yank your USB ports, forcing hard drives and cooling pads into awkward spots. Over time, that tugging damages ports. This 6.6FT USB A to USB A cable gives you slack to route cleanly across any desk, reach a floor KVM, or connect a distant hub. Place devices where they belong, not where a short USB to USB cable dictates. Zero port stress.
- Never Rupture & Nylon Braided – Hydrophobic & Anti-Pilling: Unique SR anti-break design, tested 400,000+ bends for extreme durability. Sturdy dual-shade braided nylon jacket of the USB-A to USB-A cable offers stronger protection, flexibility, anti-pilling, and tangle resistance. Hydrophobic nylon layer repels water and resists sticky residue — spilled drinks won't affect connection. No cable breakage worries, even on messy desks.
- 5Gbps Data Transfer Speed – 9-Core Tinned Copper: Transfer large files in seconds with 5Gbps speed, 10x faster than USB 2.0. Inside: a premium 9-core tinned copper matrix with triple shielding (foil+braid) blocks EMI/RFI interference for signal clarity. The 24K gold-plated connectors of the USB to USB cable ensure stable, oxidation-resistant conductivity for many years. Backward compatible with USB 2.0/1.1 ports.
- Huge Output For Your Cooling Pad: The maximum output of this USB A to USB A male to male USB 3.0 cable is up to 3A, providing enough power for your laptop cooler to perform at its best. No more worry about your laptop getting hot — ensures stable operation of your devices without low-power lag.
- Wide Compatibility: Connects USB peripherals with USB 3.0 Type-A port to a computer for speedy file transfer. Compatible with Laptop, Laptop Cooling Pad, Smart TV, USB in car, DVD player, USB 3.0 hub, Monitor, KVM, Camera, Wacom, Blu-ray Drive, Set Top Box, 2.5-Inch External Hard Drive Enclosure, and most USB 3.0 external hard drives with Type-A port.
Mac: respond to power or recognition warnings
If your Mac says a USB device needs more power or displays “USB Devices Disabled,” try another Mac port and connect the device directly rather than through a USB or Thunderbolt hub. Apple recommends contacting Apple Support if the issue persists after those checks. The warning can indicate a power or recognition problem; it does not establish that every affected setup needs a powered hub.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Linux: gather system-specific evidence before changing power management
USB power management and resume behavior on Linux depend on the kernel, device, and driver. The Linux kernel USB power-management documentation describes cases where devices may disconnect from the bus or stop working during resume. It does not establish a universal command or setting that fixes this symptom.

Before changing power-management behavior, identify the distribution and kernel, note the device and connection path, and collect relevant system logs around a disconnection. Use guidance specific to that kernel, device, and driver rather than applying a generic command.
When to seek hardware service
If the device still disconnects across multiple compatible ports and computers with a known-good cable, hardware service may be appropriate for the device or computer. The checks above can isolate parts of the connection path, but they cannot by themselves determine which component needs repair or replacement.
