If your Surface Laptop won’t charge or turn on, start with the reversible checks: disconnect accessories, confirm the outlet and charger connections, and use the power supply intended for your exact model. If the battery may be empty, leave it connected for at least 15 minutes before trying again. Then check whether the display is asleep, try a forced restart, and use the charger’s indicator light and Windows battery icon—if available—to narrow down the cause.
1. Disconnect accessories and check power delivery
- Remove connected devices. Unplug USB devices, SD cards, external monitors, keyboard covers, docks, and other accessories. Leave only the power supply connected, then try to start the laptop. An accessory can interfere with startup. Microsoft’s startup troubleshooting steps recommend trying startup without accessories.
- Check the outlet and connections. Try a different wall outlet and make sure the power supply is firmly connected at both ends. Disconnect power-hungry accessories while testing. Use a power supply designed for your exact Surface Laptop model; requirements differ by model. Microsoft’s charging guidance and model-specific power supply requirements can help identify the right supply.
- Allow time for a depleted battery. Keep the model-appropriate supply connected for at least 15 minutes. Then close and reopen the lid and press the power button.
2. Check whether the screen is asleep, then restart
Wake a black screen
If the laptop seems to be running but the screen is black, use or connect a keyboard and press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B. This is Microsoft’s display-wake shortcut for Surface troubleshooting.
Force a restart
Hold the power button until the Surface logo appears, about 20 seconds. This is Microsoft’s listed forced-restart procedure for Surface Laptop models. See Microsoft’s forced shutdown and restart instructions.
3. Read the charger indicator
If your power supply has a Surface Connect indicator, its state can help distinguish a connection issue from a battery issue. Follow the guidance for the indicator you see:

- Light off: Reconnect the charger securely and try another outlet.
- Blinking or flashing: Check the connector and port for visible debris or damage. Disconnect the charger and USB accessories, wait at least 10 seconds, then clean the connector with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Reconnect it; you can also try flipping the connector.
- Solid white, but still not charging: Continue with the battery-status checks below if Windows starts. If it does not start, test with another compatible power supply if available.
Do not use a physically damaged cable or connector. Microsoft recommends using a genuine Microsoft or Microsoft-licensed accessory for charging. Microsoft’s charging troubleshooting page explains the indicator checks and accessory recommendation.
4. If Windows starts, interpret the battery icon
Some battery icons indicate a charging limit or power-supply mismatch rather than a failed battery:

- Heart icon or an 80% ceiling: Smart charging may be limiting the charge to protect the battery.
- 50% ceiling: Battery Limit may be enabled.
- Exclamation mark: The power supply may be providing insufficient power to charge the device.
- Red X: The power supply is detected, but Windows is not detecting the battery.

5. Test the charger only after checking compatibility
If the outlet, connections, and indicator checks point to a possible power-supply fault, test with a different charger that is compatible with your exact Surface Laptop model. For a model that supports charging over USB-C, a suitable USB-C Power Delivery charger may be another test—but confirm the required wattage and support for your model first. Microsoft recommends genuine Microsoft or Microsoft-licensed accessories. Its Surface power supply and charging requirements page lists model-specific information. Do not assume a charger is suitable just because its connector fits.

6. Use software checks only if the laptop boots
The Surface app can show update status and help identify some device issues. Microsoft also documents an advanced procedure to uninstall and rediscover the battery driver for certain charging problems. Use that procedure only when Windows is running and the symptoms match Microsoft’s instructions; it cannot fix a laptop that will not boot. Microsoft specifically warns not to use that battery-driver procedure on Surface Pro X. See the qualifications and steps on Microsoft’s battery troubleshooting page.

Contact Microsoft or an authorized support provider if the Surface still will not start after these checks, Windows reports that the battery is not detected, or the charging port, connector, or cable is damaged. Microsoft says a Surface that still does not turn on may need repair or replacement service. Depending on your location and warranty coverage, options can include a Microsoft service order, in-person support where available, or self-repair for owners with the necessary technical experience and tools. Check Microsoft’s startup troubleshooting guidance and battery troubleshooting guidance for service direction. Availability varies by region.
