A battery percentage that stays frozen—such as 47% for hours, or 1% immediately after charging—usually points to stale battery data, a charging problem, or a degraded battery. Start with a restart and a charging check before attempting anything destructive. These steps cover Android and iPhone, including when to seek service.
Start with these checks
- Remove the case and accessories. Take off the phone case and disconnect external battery packs, USB accessories, docks, and other attachments. A case or accessory can cover sensors or press buttons; a faulty accessory can make charging appear abnormal. Google recommends removing cases and accessories during diagnosis.
- Check whether the phone is actually charging. Connect it to a known-good wall adapter and cable. If Android shows “Check charging accessory,” replace the cable or adapter. Damaged or incompatible charging hardware can cause slow charging or no charging, leaving the percentage apparently stuck. Google identifies damaged or unsupported cables and adapters as possible causes.
- Leave it connected if it will not turn on. If an iPhone still does not turn on after a force restart, Apple recommends charging it for one hour and trying again. If the low-charge battery icon appears, charge for 30 minutes or until the phone starts. Apple’s unresponsive-iPhone instructions provide these timings.
- Check available storage. Android phones can begin to malfunction when less than 10% of internal storage is free. Delete or move large videos, downloads, and unused apps if storage is nearly full. Google documents this storage threshold.
Restart the phone
A normal restart reloads the operating system and battery-status service without erasing your data. Use the instructions for your device.
Android
- Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold: hold Power + Volume up for a few seconds, then tap Restart.
- Pixel 5a and earlier: hold the Power button for about 30 seconds, or until the phone restarts.
- Other Android phones: hold the Power button and choose Restart when the power menu appears. Button combinations and menu labels vary by manufacturer.
If the screen is frozen, hold the Power button for about 30 seconds. On a Pixel, you can force a restart by holding Power for up to 60 seconds; release it when the phone begins rebooting and the “G” logo appears. Google’s Pixel restart instructions cover these button combinations.
iPhone
Use the combination that matches the iPhone. Apple’s force-restart instructions provide these steps.

| iPhone model | Force-restart procedure |
|---|---|
| iPhone with Face ID | Press and quickly release Volume Up, press and quickly release Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. This can take longer than 10 seconds. |
| iPhone 7 or 7 Plus | Hold the Side button and Volume Down together until the Apple logo appears. |
| iPhone 6s or earlier | Hold Home + Side, or Home + Top, until the Apple logo appears. This takes around 10 seconds. |
A force restart does not delete your photos, apps, or settings. It is the right first step when the percentage, touchscreen, or whole phone is unresponsive.
Fix a stuck battery percentage on Android
1. Turn on the percentage display and compare it with the battery screen
On a Pixel running Android 14 or later, open Settings > Battery > Battery percentage, then turn on Battery percentage. This puts the number in the status bar. Google documents this Pixel setting path.
Next, open Settings > Battery > Battery usage. Pixel provides View by apps and View by systems. Look for unusually high usage, an app that has been active continuously, or a sudden change after installing an app. The listed percentages may not total exactly 100% because of rounding.
2. Force-stop a suspicious app
If the problem began after installing or updating an app, stop that app temporarily:
- Open Settings > Apps > See all apps.
- Tap the suspected app.
- Tap Force stop, then OK.
- Restart the phone and watch whether the percentage begins changing normally.
Other Android manufacturers may put the same control under a different menu or use slightly different labels. Google’s generic instructions describe the path above.
3. Test in Safe Mode
Safe Mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. It is a diagnostic test, not a battery reset. Google explains how Safe Mode helps identify app problems.

- If the percentage behaves normally in Safe Mode, a downloaded app is probably involved. Remove recently installed or recently updated apps one at a time.
- If the percentage remains stuck in Safe Mode, a downloaded app is unlikely to be the cause.
Some Home-screen widgets may disappear temporarily in Safe Mode and return after a normal restart.
4. Install Android updates
Open Settings > System > Software update and install any available update. On some Android phones, you must first open About phone or About tablet; manufacturers use different menu structures. Google’s Android update instructions provide this path.
Updates can correct battery-status and charging bugs. Keep the phone connected to reliable Wi-Fi and power while updating.
5. Check Pixel charging protection
A Pixel may intentionally stop around 70%–80% to protect the battery. This can happen after charging continuously for more than a few hours in high temperatures or for more than several days. Look for messages such as “Protecting your battery” or “Charging optimized to protect your battery.”
If the Settings app shows Charge to full, tap it to allow charging to 100%. Restarting the Pixel also overrides the current protection event, although protection can activate again when the same conditions return.
To review the setting, open Settings > Battery > Battery health > Charging optimization. Depending on the model, you may see Adaptive Charging and Limit to 80%. Google documents the 80% limit for Pixel 6a and later.

When Limit to 80% is enabled, the Pixel still needs to reach a full charge every 10th cycle to keep capacity readings accurate. After it reaches 100%, leave it plugged in for at least 30 minutes. Google explains Pixel charging protection and this capacity-reading requirement.
Fix a stuck battery percentage on iPhone
1. Check Battery settings
Open Settings > Battery and review the usage graph and app activity. Look for an app with unusually high background activity or a sharp usage change that matches when the percentage became unreliable.
Also check Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. A chemically aged battery has reduced maximum capacity and may be unable to deliver peak power. Low charge, cold temperatures, and battery age make unexpected shutdowns more likely. Apple describes battery aging and performance effects.
2. Update iOS
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- Review the installed iOS version and any available update.
- Tap Download and Install.
For automatic updates, open Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates, then review Automatically Install and Automatically Download.
If the update needs more storage, iOS may offer to temporarily remove apps. Tap Continue; the apps are reinstalled after the update. Tapping Cancel means you must manually delete content instead. A VPN or proxy can also prevent the iPhone from contacting Apple’s update servers, so temporarily disconnect one if an update will not appear or download. Apple’s update instructions cover these cases.
3. Consider battery aging
A stuck or implausible percentage combined with shutdowns, sluggishness, or poor performance can indicate a worn battery rather than a display glitch. Apple lists possible aging-related symptoms including longer app launches, lower scrolling frame rates, a dimmed backlight, lower speaker volume, background apps reloading, and the camera flash being disabled in extreme cases.

The exact Battery Health screen and service recommendation are more useful than trying to recalibrate the phone manually. Apple’s battery documentation lists the affected models and symptoms.
Do not “calibrate” it by repeatedly draining it to zero
Regularly running a phone down to 0% and charging it back to 100% is not a general fix. Google says Android users do not need to teach the phone its battery capacity by going from full to zero or zero to full. Apple likewise describes battery behavior in terms of chemical aging, charge cycles, temperature, and usage—not repeated full discharges as a troubleshooting procedure.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to factory-reset—and when not to
A factory reset should be a last software step, not the first response to a frozen percentage. It erases the phone, uninstalls apps, and removes their associated data. Back up first. Google recommends charging the device to at least 70%; the reset can take up to an hour.
There is also an account-lock risk. After resetting, Android may ask for the Google Account credentials previously used on the phone. If you recently changed that Google Account password, wait 24 hours before performing the reset. Google documents reset preparation and account verification.
Reset only if the problem persists after restarting, checking the charger, removing suspect apps, testing Safe Mode, and installing updates. If the number remains impossible—for example, it stays at 100% while the phone shuts down quickly, or drops from 60% to 5%—software may not be the root cause.

Get service if the symptoms point to hardware
Arrange a battery inspection or repair when the phone repeatedly shuts down, becomes unusually hot, charges only with a particular cable position, has a swollen or lifting battery, or shows a large percentage drop immediately after unplugging. Stop using a phone with a visibly swollen battery and do not press the screen or back panel back into place.
If a different compatible charger, restart, update, and Safe Mode test do not change the reading, the battery, charging port, power-management circuit, or temperature sensor may need professional diagnosis.
FAQ
Why is my phone battery percentage stuck at one number?
The reading may be stale because of a software fault, but a faulty cable or adapter, charging protection, low storage, a problematic app, or a degraded battery can produce similar symptoms. Restart the phone, test a known-good charger, and check the relevant battery-usage screen.
Will restarting fix a stuck battery percentage?
Often it can if the battery-status service or operating system is displaying stale data. It will not repair a worn battery, damaged charging port, unsupported cable, or other hardware fault.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why does my Pixel stop charging at 80%?
Pixel charging protection can limit charging to approximately 70%–80% under conditions such as extended charging or high temperatures. Check for “Protecting your battery,” then use the “Charge to full” link if you need 100%. Also review Settings > Battery > Battery health > Charging optimization.
Should I drain my Android phone or iPhone to 0% to recalibrate it?
No. Repeatedly draining the phone to zero is not a general fix and can add unnecessary battery stress. The Pixel 10th-cycle full charge is a specific capacity-reading requirement when a charging limit is enabled.
Can a bad charger make the percentage look frozen?
Yes. An incompatible or damaged cable or USB power adapter can cause slow or failed charging. On Android, a “Check charging accessory” notification is a strong reason to replace the cable or adapter and retest.
What should I do if the phone still shuts down even though it shows 50%?
Check battery health, update the operating system, and test with a known-good charger. If the phone also gets hot, drops rapidly after unplugging, or shuts down repeatedly, arrange professional battery or hardware service.

The Bottom Line
Restart first, then remove accessories and test a known-good charger. On Android, check Battery usage, Safe Mode, storage, updates, and Pixel charging protection. On iPhone, check Battery Health & Charging and install the latest iOS update. Do not repeatedly drain the phone to zero, and reserve a factory reset for persistent software problems after backing up. A percentage that remains implausible alongside shutdowns, heat, swelling, or rapid drops usually needs battery or hardware service.
