To fix a Square payment error, first note the exact message and identify whether the problem affects one card, one payment method, the device’s connection, or Square’s service. Check the matching device’s connection and software, then retry using a supported payment method. If you have pending offline payments, protect them before restarting or taking any other disruptive step.
Start by identifying what is failing
Write down the exact on-screen message and the Square device model. Then check whether the issue occurs with every customer or just one card, and whether it affects tap, chip, or swipe. These details help distinguish a card or method problem from a reader, device, network, or Square service issue.
- If only one payment method fails, ask the customer to try another supported form of payment or card. That narrows the problem but does not establish why a particular card was declined; Square’s device guidance does not identify an issuer’s reason for a specific decline.
- If every method fails, check the device connection and Square service status before treating the card reader as faulty.
- If the error appears on a customer-facing display, confirm the checkout is ready for the customer. On Square Register, tap Charge to activate the customer display before the customer taps, inserts, or swipes.
Check the internet connection and Square service
Square’s US offline-payment guidance distinguishes two messages: “Check network connection” points to an internet outage, while “Square payment error” indicates a detected Square service disruption. For a service issue, select your country on Square’s system-status page and check whether Payment Acceptance is marked as disrupted. A local connection issue and a Square service disruption need different remedies.
For a suspected local network problem, open the network settings on the device and verify that it is connected to the intended network. On Square Register, the documented path is More > Settings > Hardware > Network; confirm the selected network and toggle Wi-Fi off and on. Other Square devices have different menus, so use the instructions for the specific model.

Square’s Handheld guidance also identifies nearby microwaves, large electric motors, and metal cash drawers as possible sources of signal interference. If the connection is weak, move the device away from those potential sources and retry.
Check the card, payment method, and reader
Tap, insert, or swipe
Make sure the customer is using the intended method and follow the prompts on the screen. On Square Handheld, hold a contactless card or device near the contactless symbol. Insert a chip card with the chip facing up and leave it in place until prompted to remove it.

For magnetic-stripe payments on Square Handheld, Square’s guidance specifies a connected Square Reader for magstripe USB-C, sold separately. The stripe should face inward as described in Square’s reader instructions. This reader is relevant only when the problem is a supported swipe transaction; it will not resolve a network disruption or an issuer decline.
If a Square Reader for magstripe will not connect or read
- Unplug the reader and reconnect it.
- Toggle Bluetooth off and on.
- On supported Apple devices, follow the prompt to select Headphones.
- If the swipe is steady but still fails, check the reader’s orientation instructions and make a slow, steady swipe.
If a swipe prompts “Insert Chip Card,” Square’s reader guidance describes enabling Swipe Chip Cards in checkout settings. Square warns that allowing a swipe in this situation has liability implications; review its current guidance before changing the setting.

Square Stand-specific checks
Square’s Stand troubleshooting guidance says to confirm that the card is accepted, the transaction is at least $1.00, and the payment is being taken in the country where the account was activated. It also recommends trying a different card. These are checks specified for Square Stand; do not assume the $1.00 minimum applies to other devices or markets.
Update and restart before considering a reset
For Handheld, Terminal, and Register, Square’s device troubleshooting sequence includes checking for software updates, restarting, and retrying the payment. For Square Stand, the sequence includes updating the Square POS app and iOS, checking the physical and in-app connections, and rebooting the iPad and Stand.

- For Stand, check for updates to the Square POS app and iOS.
- Restart the device, and for Stand, reboot the iPad and Stand.
- Retry the payment with the same method. If it still fails, test another supported method or card and note the result.
Do not delete and reinstall the POS app on Stand until any pending offline payments have been uploaded. A factory reset is not the same as a restart: Square places it after other troubleshooting and warns that it can remove settings and pending offline transactions.
Use offline payments only when eligible, and protect pending transactions
Square POS apps work best with an internet connection. Some supported devices and payment types can accept offline payments when the feature is available and enabled, but eligibility depends on the device, payment type, configuration, and disruption. Square’s guidance excludes some payment types, including manually entered cards, Afterpay, Cash App Pay, Square Gift Cards, and Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android. Check Square’s current offline-payment guidance for your device and payment type before continuing checkout offline.

Square says offline transactions are stored in the POS app and process after reconnection. A decline may not be reported until the device reconnects, and the seller is responsible for offline payments that expire, decline, or are disputed. For the listed Register, Terminal, and Handheld hardware, Square requires pending offline payments to be uploaded within 72 hours and recommends uploading within 24 hours to reduce the risk of declines or chargebacks.
Before troubleshooting further, check whether offline payments are pending. Do not sign out, delete the POS app, switch modes or locations, or factory reset while they are pending: Square warns they may be permanently lost and the funds not captured. If a restart is necessary, bring the device back online and upload the pending payments as soon as possible.
Square’s offline guidance also describes notifications beginning in March 2026 and automatic enablement in April 2026 if a seller takes no action. Because these are time-sensitive settings changes, check the current Dashboard and Square guidance rather than relying on an older setting state.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Send diagnostics or contact Square if the error persists
If the supported connection, method, update, and restart checks do not resolve the problem, use the diagnostic-report option described in Square’s troubleshooting guide for Handheld, Terminal, or Register. Square says reports on Handheld and Terminal can take 2–7 minutes to upload and require a strong internet connection.
When contacting Square Support, provide the exact error message, device model, whether all cards or only one method fail, whether the device is online, and which troubleshooting steps you tried. If offline payments are pending, say so before following instructions that could sign out, delete app data, change modes or locations, or reset the device. Square’s US troubleshooting material does not diagnose a particular issuer decline, account restriction, unsupported payment type, or hardware fault from the generic message alone.
