If your smart TV won’t connect to Wi-Fi, first check whether another device can join the same network and load a website. If it can, troubleshoot the TV’s network choice, password, signal, and connection status. If it cannot, focus on the router, modem, or internet service instead.
First, find out whether the problem is the TV or the internet connection
- Test another device. On a phone or computer connected to the same Wi-Fi, try loading a website. If that device also has no internet, the issue is more likely with the router, modem, or internet service than with the TV. Roku’s connection-check guide and LG’s TV internet troubleshooting guide recommend checking the connection beyond the TV.
- If multiple devices are offline, check for an ISP outage and restart the modem and router according to their manufacturers’ instructions. LG suggests unplugging the modem and router, waiting about 10 seconds, and reconnecting them; follow your equipment’s own directions if its restart procedure differs.
- If other devices work, continue with the TV. Confirm it is trying to connect to the correct Wi-Fi name, then enter the password again carefully. Passwords are case-sensitive. Samsung and LG both identify the network choice and password as checks when a TV cannot join Wi-Fi (Samsung; LG).
- Think about recent changes. If the TV stopped connecting after a router setting changed, review that change. Samsung notes that router settings can affect a TV’s ability to find or connect to a network.
If the TV can’t find your Wi-Fi network
Rescan and check whether the network is hidden
Run the TV’s network scan again. If your Wi-Fi name (SSID) is hidden, temporarily make it visible while troubleshooting, then scan again. Samsung recommends checking router settings and network compatibility; use the manufacturer’s instructions for your router rather than changing security settings at random.
Enter the network manually only if the model supports it
Some Sony TVs allow you to enter a missing network name manually. That option is model-dependent; see Sony’s network troubleshooting guide or the support page for your exact TV model for the available steps.
Check whether the TV’s Wi-Fi controls are available
If the Wi-Fi menu is disabled or the network list remains empty after rescanning, the issue may need model-specific diagnosis. LG identifies an empty Wi-Fi list or disabled Wi-Fi menu as reasons to contact LG Support. Samsung also advises seeking service if its suggested troubleshooting does not resolve repeated MAC-address failure.

If the TV sees Wi-Fi but won’t join
- Re-enter the password. Check uppercase and lowercase letters, and verify the password by connecting another device if needed.
- Confirm the network is the intended one. If your router broadcasts more than one Wi-Fi name, make sure you selected the network you mean to use.
- Review router changes and access controls. Check whether settings changed recently or whether the router is blocking the TV. For compatibility questions, use guidance for your TV and router models; do not broadly disable Wi-Fi protections or weaken security as a general fix.
If the TV says it’s connected but apps have no internet
A TV can establish a wireless link to the router without successfully reaching the internet. Check a phone or computer on the same Wi-Fi: if it also cannot load a website, troubleshoot the modem, router, or ISP. If other devices do have internet, inspect the TV’s network status and confirm it joined the intended network. Roku’s connection diagnostic guide distinguishes a failure to connect to the network from a failure to reach the internet.
If Wi-Fi is weak or unstable
A TV may detect a network even when the signal is too weak for a stable connection. Before adding equipment, move the router closer to the TV where practical and reduce obstructions between them, then test again. Samsung includes signal strength and router placement among its Wi-Fi troubleshooting checks.

A Wi-Fi extender or repeater may help when distance is the problem, but results vary. LG warns that an extender can make a connection slower or unstable depending on the environment. Try improving router and TV placement first rather than assuming an extender will solve the issue.

A wired connection can be a useful fallback when Wi-Fi is unreliable. Check that your TV supports wired networking and has the required port or compatible adapter. Connect it to the router with Ethernet, then select the wired connection in the TV’s network settings. Roku documents Ethernet setup for supported Roku TVs and streaming devices; some Roku players require a supported USB Ethernet adapter (Roku setup guidance). LG also recommends wired networking as a reliable option when available.

If Ethernet works while Wi-Fi does not, the result narrows the problem to wireless coverage or the TV’s wireless settings, but does not by itself identify which component is at fault.

When to contact the TV maker or internet provider
- Contact the TV manufacturer if the TV shows no wireless networks, Wi-Fi settings are unavailable, or TV-side connection tests continue to fail. Have the exact model number and any diagnostic message ready.
- Contact the internet provider if multiple devices on the same home network cannot access the internet, especially after checking the equipment and any reported outage.
- Use model-specific support steps. Menu names and reset procedures vary by model. Don’t assume a factory reset will fix a hardware fault; consult the TV maker before taking that step.
