First find out what is dropping: the Wi-Fi signal, the router’s internet connection, or the router itself restarting. Connect a computer to the router by Ethernet, then, if needed, test it directly with the modem. Those checks help distinguish a wireless problem from a router, modem, or ISP problem—and keep you from repeatedly rebooting the wrong device.

Identify what disconnects

When the next outage happens, note what you see. The clues help choose the right test, but none proves a component has failed on its own.

  • Only wireless devices lose access: Check whether the Wi-Fi network name disappears or devices stay connected to Wi-Fi but report no internet.
  • Wired and wireless devices both lose internet: Investigate the router’s connection to the modem and the modem or ISP service.
  • Only one device drops: Compare it with other devices before changing router settings. If other devices remain online, focus on that device’s Wi-Fi adapter or driver.
  • The router’s lights go out or cycle: The router may be restarting or losing power, rather than merely losing its internet connection.

Test the connection by Ethernet

Connect a computer to a LAN port on the router with an Ethernet cable and use it while wireless devices are having trouble. If internet access stays stable over Ethernet, the problem is more likely Wi-Fi-specific. If wired and wireless connections both fail, continue by checking the router’s WAN connection and the upstream modem or ISP service. Microsoft’s Windows guidance also recommends checking the connection to the router and using direct Ethernet to the modem as an isolation test: Fix Wi-Fi connection issues in Windows.

Check the modem and ISP connection

If the router’s wired and wireless connections both drop, bypass the router if your equipment and ISP allow it: disconnect the router and connect a computer to the modem by Ethernet. If the connection remains unstable directly through the modem, the likely fault is the modem or ISP service, not the router. TP-Link advises contacting the ISP for modem or service-line troubleshooting in that case: TP-Link Router Keeps Disconnecting? Fix Unstable Wi-Fi.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Reconnect the router after the test. Follow your ISP’s instructions for a modem/router combination device; a separate-router test may not apply to that setup.

Inspect the cable between modem and router

Check that the Ethernet cable from the modem is firmly seated in the router’s WAN port, not a LAN port, and inspect it for visible damage. If it is loose or damaged, test with a known-good Ethernet cable of a suitable length and connector. Borrow one if possible before buying anything. A WAN cable problem can disrupt both wired and wireless internet through the router, but it does not explain Wi-Fi-only drops when Ethernet through the router stays reliable. See TP-Link’s unstable-connection troubleshooting guide.

If only Wi-Fi disconnects

When Ethernet remains stable, focus on the wireless link rather than replacing the router or changing ISP settings.

Improve placement

  • Move the router to an open, elevated location.
  • Reduce obstructions between the router and affected devices.
  • Keep it away from nearby appliances or other sources of wireless interference where practical.

Test a different band or channel

If your router supports both bands and the signal is strong enough, try connecting an affected device to 5 GHz. In a congested area, trying another Wi-Fi channel may help. Channel options and channel-width controls vary by model and environment; consult your router’s manual rather than applying a setting as if it were universal. TP-Link lists 20 MHz channel width as one troubleshooting option on supported products, but narrower widths can affect performance and are not a guaranteed fix: TP-Link’s guide.

Check whether one client is affected

If other devices remain connected, troubleshoot the affected device’s Wi-Fi adapter or driver using the operating system’s built-in tools and the adapter maker’s official guidance. If a router’s Smart Connect feature steers devices between bands, disabling it temporarily can be a diagnostic test where that feature is available; restore it if the change does not help. ASUS also provides model-specific wireless troubleshooting guidance: WiFi signal is often disconnected.

Restart the modem and router in order

A coordinated restart can restore service, but it does not identify why the connection failed. Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi instructions describe this sequence for separate modem and router units:

  1. Unplug power from both the modem and router.
  2. Wait about 30 seconds.
  3. Restore power to the modem first and wait for its lights to settle.
  4. Restore power to the router and wait for it to finish starting.
  5. Reconnect devices and check whether the connection is stable.

Connected devices will lose internet during the restart. For a combination modem/router or equipment with a backup battery, use the ISP’s instructions rather than assuming this sequence applies. If disconnections recur, use the Ethernet and direct-modem tests instead of repeating restarts without narrowing down the fault. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide

When to contact support

  • Contact your ISP if a direct connection to the modem is unstable, or if the ISP’s equipment or service needs checking.
  • Contact the router maker if the modem connection is stable but the router still drops wired and wireless connections after you check the WAN cable and firmware.
  • Continue device-specific troubleshooting if only one computer or phone disconnects while other devices remain online.
