If your robot vacuum gets stuck, misses rooms, or loses its map, start by clearing obstructions and checking the route, sensors, and dock. These symptoms can have different causes, and error codes, sensor-cleaning methods, app settings, and reset steps vary by brand and exact model. Work through the non-destructive checks below before remapping or resetting the robot.

1. Clear the route and check for jams

Pick up cords, clothing, and other objects that could snag the wheels or brushes. Before handling moving parts, turn the robot off or follow the maintenance instructions in its manual. Check that the wheels turn freely, then inspect the main brush, side brush, bumper, and underside for trapped debris.

A jam, stuck bumper, dirty sensor, or blocked navigation unit can look like a failed part. Roborock manuals treat issues such as blocked LiDAR, a stuck bumper, jammed or suspended wheels, dirty cliff or wall sensors, and tangled brushes as separate, model-specific errors. Look up the displayed error in the manual for your exact robot rather than applying another model’s remedy. Roborock’s error-message guidance is one example.

2. If it misses a room, check access and cleaning settings

  • Open the door to the room and clear the entrance and route to it.
  • Check whether a barrier, furniture, or a closed door is preventing access.
  • Confirm that the app’s map and selected cleaning mode include the room or area.
  • If your model offers a fast-route option, check whether it is skipping boundaries or spots by design.

Roborock’s mapping instructions say to open doors to rooms intended for the map. On supported models, its fast route can skip some room boundaries and areas, so a missed edge may be a route-setting effect rather than a sensor fault. Feature names and availability vary by model and firmware. See Roborock’s missed-areas guidance and its map-creation instructions.

3. Clean navigation sensors using the model’s instructions

Use the cleaning method specified for each sensor in your robot’s manual; dry and damp cloth instructions are not interchangeable. A microfiber cloth can be useful, but the manual determines whether it should be dry or lightly dampened.

  • Roborock wall sensor: Roborock says dirt on the right-side wall sensor can cause missed areas or abnormal paths and advises wiping it with a damp cloth. Follow the instructions for your model. Roborock support
  • iRobot sensors: iRobot’s i Series navigation guidance, which also discusses Roomba 900 navigation, recommends adequate lighting and open doors, a lightly dampened soft cloth for the top window, and a clean, dry soft cloth for the floor-tracking sensor. Do not apply those directions to a different sensor or model without checking its instructions. iRobot navigation guidance

4. Rebuild a map only after checking setup

For a first Roborock map

  1. Enable map saving in the app if your model requires it.
  2. Place the robot at its dock and open the doors to the areas you want mapped.
  3. Start the mapping run and let it explore without interruption.
  4. Leave the dock in place and let the robot return to it successfully.

Roborock’s guidance says: “The robot should start from the dock and return to the dock by itself and successfully.” Supported map tools may allow you to inspect boundaries, merge or divide rooms, or select rooms in the app; available controls and menu names differ by model and firmware. See Roborock’s map-creation guidance.

For an existing iRobot smart map

Map-learning completion and recovery depend on the model. iRobot says some robots may need additional successful runs if they have failed to return to their station; its guide also suggests a mapping run when repeated failures prevent a successful mission. Check the product-specific instructions before deleting a map. iRobot’s smart-map guide

5. If the robot cannot find its dock

Check whether the robot or dock was moved, a door was closed, the route changed, or an obstacle is blocking the way. Clean the dock’s beacon or signal area and the robot’s corresponding sensor as directed by the manufacturer.

These are Roborock-specific figures, not universal placement requirements. iRobot’s Error 1010 guidance identifies blocked access, a moved or unplugged dock, and sensor interference as possible causes for the model families covered by that page. 6. Reboot before considering a reset

A reboot and a factory reset are not the same. iRobot describes rebooting as a way to resolve common robot issues while retaining maps, schedules, and preferences. A factory reset deletes saved data, and remapping may be needed afterward. Try cleaning and rebooting before considering a map deletion or reset, and use the instructions for your exact model. iRobot reboot instructions; iRobot smart-map guidance

When to contact the manufacturer

If the problem continues after the appropriate physical checks, sensor cleaning, access checks, and a non-destructive reboot, contact the manufacturer’s support. Have the brand, exact model, displayed error code, and a short description of what the robot does ready. Those details are needed to identify the right remedy; do not replace parts or interpret an error using instructions for a different model.
