To fix a JavaScript ReferenceError, read the exact message and inspect the identifier at the reported line. For ReferenceError: x is not defined, correct the name, declare it in a scope visible where it is used, or make sure the code that defines it has loaded first. For Cannot access 'x' before initialization, move the read until after its let, const, or class binding has initialized.

Identify which ReferenceError you have

A ReferenceError means JavaScript could not resolve an identifier at the point the code ran, or that it found a lexical binding that had not initialized yet. The message distinguishes these cases. MDN describes ReferenceError: "x" is not defined as: “There is a non-existent variable referenced somewhere.” MDN: “x” is not defined.

Error wording What it indicates First check
x is not defined No binding named x is available in the executing scope. Spelling, declaration, scope, and whether the defining script or dependency loaded.
Cannot access 'x' before initialization A let, const, or class binding exists but has not initialized; it is in the temporal dead zone. Execution order: find the read that occurs before the declaration initializes.

Fix “is not defined” errors

Correct the identifier

JavaScript identifiers are case-sensitive. Compare the spelling and capitalization at the error location with the declaration or import. If the intended name is different, correct the use; if it is missing, determine where the value should come from before adding a declaration.

Put the binding in a scope that can use it

A declaration inside a function is unavailable outside that function. Likewise, let and const are block-scoped. Move the use into the relevant scope, return the value and store it at the call site, pass it as an argument, or place the declaration in the narrowest shared scope appropriate to both uses.

function calculate() {
  const total = 2 + 3;
  return total;
}

const result = calculate();
console.log(result); // 5

Reading total directly outside calculate would throw: that name exists only inside the function. Returning it and assigning the result gives the caller a binding it can access.

Declare a name before assigning to it

In strict mode, assigning to an undeclared identifier throws a ReferenceError rather than creating an accidental global.

'use strict';

let count = 1;
count += 1;
console.log(count); // 2

Use const when the binding will not be reassigned and let when it will. If shared global state is genuinely intended, use an explicit property such as globalThis.count = 1; do not disable strict mode just to suppress the error.

Check dependencies and browser script order

If a browser script expects a library-provided global, verify that the library loaded successfully and that the code using it runs afterward. In a page using script elements, load the library before the consumer. For module imports or other runtimes, check that environment’s module-loading rules rather than assuming script-tag behavior applies.

Fix “Cannot access before initialization” errors

A let, const, or class declaration creates a lexical binding that cannot be read until execution reaches and initializes it. Move the read after initialization or restructure the code so the value is initialized before it is used.

const value = 3;
console.log(value); // 3

Textual order alone is not always enough to diagnose the problem: what matters is execution order. For example, a function can refer to a binding declared later in the file if the function is called only after that binding initializes. Trace the actual call path and find the first read that happens too early.

typeof is not a workaround for a lexical binding in its temporal dead zone; typeof value also throws if that binding has not initialized.

Tell ReferenceError apart from undefined

A declared variable without an initializer has the value undefined. An undeclared identifier is different: reading it throws a ReferenceError. A var declaration is function-scoped and its binding is hoisted, so before its initializer runs the value is undefined; changing a declaration to var is not a general fix for an unavailable name or a scope problem.

typeof missingName can check an undeclared global identifier without throwing, but this is mainly useful when testing whether a global exists. It does not avoid the temporal dead zone for let, const, or class.

Use this debugging sequence

  1. Read the full error text. Separate “is not defined” from “Cannot access before initialization”; they point to different causes.
  2. Go to the reported line. Identify the exact name being read or assigned and compare its spelling and capitalization with its declaration.
  3. Find the declaration or import. If there is none, establish where the value is supposed to come from rather than inventing a variable just to silence the error.
  4. Trace scope boundaries. Check enclosing functions and blocks. Pass, return, or move the value only when that matches the intended design.
  5. Trace execution order. For a temporal-dead-zone error, locate the read that occurs before initialization. For a dependency global, confirm the dependency loaded and runs before its consumer.
  6. Check assignment context. If the failure happens on assignment to an undeclared name, declare the intended binding; use globalThis only when a global property is deliberate.
  7. Run the code again. Confirm the original failing path now works and check for a subsequent ReferenceError that may have been masked by the first failure.

Common causes and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix
name is not defined Typo or capitalization mismatch. Use the exact declared identifier.
A local value works in one function but not another. The declaration is outside the second function’s scope. Pass it as an argument, return it, or put both uses in a suitable shared scope.
Cannot access 'name' before initialization Read before a lexical declaration initializes. Change execution order; do not rely on typeof to bypass it.
An assignment such as count = 1 fails in strict mode. No binding was declared. Declare count with let or const, as appropriate.
A library name is not defined in browser code. The dependency did not load, or consumer code ran first. Check the load and execution order; for modules, follow the runtime’s module rules.

If you need a website screenshot while debugging a page, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request returns an image or PDF; its consent handling can accept cookie banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP tools to take screenshots, inspect page information, and capture PDFs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does `typeof` still throw a ReferenceError?

It throws when the identifier is a lexical binding in its temporal dead zone, before a `let`, `const`, or `class` declaration has initialized.

Does changing `let` to `var` fix a ReferenceError?

Not generally. `var` changes scope and initialization behavior, but it does not correct a typo, make a function-local name available elsewhere, or ensure a dependency has loaded.
