Pull accessible paper slowly, check for torn fragments, and reload paper that matches the printer’s specifications. Do not force a stuck sheet or assume every printer opens the same way.
1. Read the jam message before opening the printer
Note any location or support code shown on the display. Your printer may point to a tray, rear cover, output area, duplex path, internal area, or automatic document feeder. Check the manual for your exact model to confirm where to look and which covers you may open. Procedures vary—even between models from the same manufacturer. HP’s jam guidance also notes that a jam alert can appear when no sheet is visible.
2. Make the printer safe to inspect
Follow the model’s instructions for cancelling the job, switching the printer off, unplugging it, and opening covers. Never reach into a moving printer or press its controls while your hand is inside. Epson’s guidance for its specified models says, “Never touch the buttons on the control panel while your hand is inside the product.” Do not move a carriage by hand or reach into an area unless your model’s manual explicitly tells you how to do so safely. Epson’s WF-4830 Series instructions are one model-specific example.
3. Clear the indicated paper path gently
Open only the access point described in your manual. If the instructions permit removing the sheet, grasp it with both hands and pull slowly to reduce the chance of tearing. Do not assume paper should always be pulled toward the front or the rear: the permitted direction and access steps depend on the model. If the sheet resists, stop and follow the next access step in the manual rather than pulling harder. Epson warns, “Using too much force may damage the product.” Its WF-4830 Series guidance illustrates why model instructions matter.

4. Check for torn paper and obstructions
If a sheet tears, inspect the accessible part of the indicated path for leftover pieces. Check only the areas named in the manual; fragments can contribute to repeated jam problems. A flashlight may help you see into a dark area, but do not insert a sharp object to retrieve paper. Avoid touching cables, films, belts, printheads, fusers, rollers, or other internal components unless your model’s manual specifically provides safe access instructions.
5. Reload suitable paper and resume printing
Remove loose or unsuitable sheets, correct curled paper, and load supported media according to the tray instructions. Match the specified size, type, and weight; follow the required orientation; keep the stack within the capacity; and set the edge guides as directed. Use clean, flat sheets rather than paper that is curled, creased, old, too thin, or too thick. Epson’s manual recommends smooth, high-quality paper and following paper-specific loading instructions. Epson’s paper-loading guidance applies to the WF-4830 Series.

Paper behavior can depend on the printer and how it feeds. For example, Canon notes that curled A5 paper may jam as it exits certain models; that is not a universal restriction on A5. Canon’s GX2000 guidance also describes model-specific loading considerations, including orientation. Use your own model’s specifications rather than treating another printer’s advice as universal.
Follow the printer’s on-screen prompt to clear the alert. Then retry the job or reprint any page that did not finish.

6. If the jam message remains
With the printer safe to inspect, revisit the other locations named in its manual and look for small fragments or foreign objects in accessible areas. A persistent alert with no visible sheet may be a false jam report, but it does not identify the cause by itself. If the manufacturer’s clearing steps do not resolve the issue, use its support or service instructions. For example, Canon’s TR150-series procedure directs users to contact a service center if its listed steps fail; that direction is specific to the models covered there. Canon’s TR150-series instructions explain that escalation.

- Choose paper that matches the printer’s supported size, type, and weight; there is no universal paper brand or weight that suits every model.
- Keep sheets clean and flat. Correct curled paper and avoid mixing media of different thicknesses unless the manual permits it.
- Load the stack in the specified orientation, adjust the guides, and do not exceed the tray’s capacity.
- If jams recur, consult the model’s troubleshooting and service guidance instead of replacing rollers or other parts based on guesswork.
These checks address possible causes, not a diagnosis of every jam. HP lists unsuitable or mixed paper, overfilled trays, paper left in the path, and debris on feed rollers among potential causes. HP’s general guidance also notes that an alert can occur without visible paper.
