If your Pixel started freezing, using more battery, or losing Wi-Fi or mobile service after an Android update, start with a restart, check for system and app updates, and test whether the problem affects the whole phone or just one app. The timing is a useful clue, but it does not prove the update caused the issue. Work through the checks below before trying a reset that removes your data.

Start with the symptom and a restart

First identify what is failing: one app or the whole phone, Wi-Fi or mobile data (or both), and whether an app update happened around the same time as the Android update. That distinction helps you avoid changing network settings to address an app problem, or deleting an app when the issue affects the entire device.

If the screen is frozen, hold the Power button for about 30 seconds to restart, as Google recommends. On a Pixel 6 or later, the battery troubleshooting instructions direct you to press Power and Volume Up to open the restart controls. Pixel 5a and earlier can be restarted by holding Power. Button behavior can differ by model and software version, so use the instructions for your Pixel if these controls do not match.

Check for updates and available storage

  1. Open Settings > System > Software update and install any update offered for your phone.
  2. Open Google Play and update installed apps.
  3. Open Settings > Storage. Google warns that Pixel phones can have problems when less than 10% of storage is available. If space is low, remove files or apps you no longer need, then check whether the symptom improves. Low storage is a possible contributor, not proof of the cause.

Pixel updates can include operating-system changes, security enhancements, new features, and bug fixes. Their rollout timing depends on the phone and carrier, and an update can take a few weeks to reach a device. Check your own update status rather than assuming a corrective release is immediately available: Google’s Pixel update information.

Use Safe mode to check for an app problem

Safe mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. If the freezing, drain, or other symptom stops in Safe mode, a downloaded app may be involved. Restart normally and remove recently installed or updated apps one at a time, restarting between removals, until you identify whether one changes the behavior. If the symptom continues in Safe mode, keep investigating the system, network, or device rather than assuming an app is responsible.

For Wi-Fi testing in Safe mode, turn Airplane mode off first; Google notes that it turns on automatically when entering Safe mode. Google’s instructions for fixing a Pixel phone that freezes or becomes unresponsive explain how to enter Safe mode and continue troubleshooting.

If your Pixel battery is draining after the update

Google says, “After a software update, it’s normal for your Pixel battery to drain a little more than usual.” The phone may use extra power while downloading and optimizing software. If unusual drain continues beyond a few days, investigate further rather than assuming that all post-update drain is normal. Google’s battery troubleshooting guidance covers additional checks.

  1. Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage and look for an app using unusually large amounts of power.
  2. Update the app, restrict its background use, or uninstall it if you do not need it. Safe mode can help distinguish an app-related drain from a problem that remains when downloaded apps are disabled.
  3. Keep Adaptive Battery and battery optimization enabled. Battery diagnostics are available on Pixel 6 and later.

If your Pixel won’t connect to Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi troubleshooting is separate from mobile-network troubleshooting. Try the following checks in order, testing a web page after relevant changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Turn Wi-Fi off and back on. Check that Airplane mode is off, then restart the phone.
  2. Connect another device to the same Wi-Fi network. If that device also cannot get online, investigate the router or internet service. If it works, continue checking the Pixel.
  3. Forget the saved network and join it again. On public Wi-Fi, look for a sign-in page that must be completed before browsing works.
  4. Test the connection in Safe mode, with Airplane mode turned off. If Wi-Fi works there, a downloaded app may be interfering.
  5. If other steps fail, use Google’s Reset Bluetooth & Wi-Fi option. This removes saved Wi-Fi connections, so you will need to reconnect to networks afterward. Google lists these checks in its Wi-Fi troubleshooting instructions.

If your Pixel has no mobile data or service

Check mobile service independently of Wi-Fi. Confirm that mobile data and Use SIM are enabled, Airplane mode is off, and the phone shows signal. If possible, check whether calls and texts work as well as data; that can help clarify whether the issue is limited to internet access.

Coverage, supported network types, and 5G availability depend on country, phone configuration, carrier, and coverage. A 5G icon does not guarantee that the phone is currently receiving 5G service. Check your carrier’s coverage and ask whether there is an outage, a plan change, or a setting affecting your line. Google’s mobile connectivity troubleshooting page provides device checks.

If you need a reset, choose Settings > System > Reset options > Reset mobile network settings. This is distinct from the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi reset; use the reset that matches the connection problem. Google notes that mobile-network options and capabilities vary by device and carrier.

Choose the next step by its risk and diagnostic value

Step What it can help establish Main risk or trade-off
Restart, install updates, check storage, and test in Safe mode Checks common software and downloaded-app causes before more disruptive recovery. Low data risk; Safe mode temporarily disables downloaded apps.
Reset Wi-Fi and Bluetooth or mobile network settings Targets saved settings for the affected connection type. Removes saved network configuration; the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth and mobile resets are separate actions.
Factory data reset Can help with some settings or third-party-software problems after simpler checks fail. Erases device data and uninstalls apps and their associated data. Back up first.
Google software repair or service Offers an escalation route when ordinary troubleshooting has not resolved the fault. The software-repair workflow requires a computer and a USB cable that connects to the phone. Repair options depend on device and location.

Back up before a factory reset or service visit

A factory data reset is not the same as a network reset: Google says it removes data from the device and uninstalls apps and their associated data. Back up the phone before proceeding. If you cannot access Settings, Google documents a button-based Fastboot/Recovery reset; that route is destructive too. Follow the instructions for your model in Google’s factory-reset guidance.

Google’s Update and Software Repair tool is another option for persistent software trouble. It requires a computer and a USB cord that connects to the phone. If the problem remains, contact Google support for device issues or your carrier for coverage, outage, SIM, or plan questions. Before a service visit, you can enable Settings > System > Repair mode. Do not give a technician your lock-screen PIN, password, or pattern. Google’s Repair mode instructions explain how the feature works.
