If your PC stops showing a display after you enable XMP or EXPO, first allow memory training to finish. If it still will not POST, turn the computer off, disconnect AC power, and follow your motherboard manual’s exact Clear CMOS procedure to restore firmware defaults. Confirm the PC boots at defaults before checking memory compatibility or trying the profile again.

Why enabling XMP or EXPO can stop a PC from booting

XMP and EXPO are memory profiles loaded through motherboard firmware. A profile may not train successfully on a particular combination of memory kit, motherboard, and CPU, leaving the PC without a successful POST or display. ASUS notes that the maximum memory frequency depends on the memory module, motherboard, and CPU specifications (ASUS motherboard FAQ).

A blank display immediately after changing memory settings does not necessarily mean the system has failed permanently. The system may be training memory as it starts, and the wait can vary by hardware and memory capacity.

Step 1: Give memory training time to complete

After the first restart with XMP or EXPO enabled, leave the PC powered on and wait several minutes. Avoid repeatedly restarting it or forcing a shutdown while training may still be underway. ASUS Support describes a vendor example of approximately 5–10 minutes depending on memory capacity, including up to 10 minutes for 64 GB; ASUS ROG says an AM5 system may remain at Q-CODE 15 for five minutes or longer. These are examples, not universal timers or requirements for every motherboard (ASUS boot/no-display guidance; ASUS ROG memory-training explainer).

If your board displays a training indicator, consult its manual to interpret it. If training finishes and the computer boots, do not assume the memory is stable under continued use; proceed to the stability check below.

Step 2: If it still will not POST, clear CMOS

If the display remains blank and the PC does not complete POST after allowing time for training, restore firmware defaults with Clear CMOS. First turn off the PC and disconnect AC power. Then use only the button or jumper procedure documented for your exact motherboard model. Jumper locations and methods vary; do not guess which pins to bridge.

ASUS recommends clearing CMOS when XMP, EXPO, or DOCP settings fail, and MSI manuals likewise direct users to clear CMOS and restore defaults if memory changes make a system unstable or unbootable (ASUS motherboard FAQ; MSI motherboard manual guidance).

  1. Find the manual for the exact motherboard model and revision, if the manufacturer distinguishes revisions.
  2. Locate the manual’s Clear CMOS instructions and identify the specified button or jumper.
  3. With the PC off and AC power disconnected, follow those instructions exactly; do not improvise a jumper procedure.
  4. Reconnect power and start the computer. Confirm that it reaches firmware or the operating system with defaults restored.

Step 3: Check memory and slot compatibility at defaults

If the PC boots at defaults, record the memory kit model, number of modules, motherboard model, CPU, BIOS version, and which slots the modules occupy. Compare the kit and configuration with the motherboard’s Qualified Vendor List (QVL) and manual. The manual’s recommended slots matter, particularly when using fewer than the board’s maximum number of modules.

If troubleshooting requires isolating a module or slot, test one module at a time only as the motherboard manual permits. Use a matched kit rather than combining unrelated kits: ASUS recommends QVL memory and matched modules for troubleshooting (ASUS motherboard FAQ; ASUS memory troubleshooting steps).

Step 4: Decide whether to retry XMP or EXPO

Retrying the profile is optional. Before doing so, verify that the memory kit supports the profile and that your motherboard and CPU combination supports the selected settings. If you choose to retry, change one setting at a time and allow training to complete after each change. If the system becomes unbootable or unstable again, return to defaults rather than repeatedly forcing failed starts.

A successful POST alone does not establish sustained memory stability. ASUS ROG advises stability testing after boot, but the guidance cited here does not establish one required test tool or duration (ASUS ROG memory-training explainer).

If the PC still will not boot at defaults

If the system remains unable to boot after CMOS has been cleared and defaults restored, the XMP or EXPO profile may not be the only fault. Follow the motherboard manufacturer’s no-POST troubleshooting instructions for the exact model, or seek qualified service. The profile-recovery guidance alone cannot identify other causes.
