If a PC game demo does nothing when you press Play, closes during startup, or crashes in a session, start with low-risk checks: restart the PC, compare it with the demo’s official system requirements, update Windows and hardware drivers, then verify the installation if you use Steam. These symptoms do not identify a single cause; the right next step depends on the game, launcher, error message, and when the crash occurs.
1. Restart and identify what happens
Save any open work, restart the PC, then try launching the demo once more. Steam recommends a fresh restart before following its general launch troubleshooting guidance: Steam’s game launch troubleshooting.
Note the exact symptom rather than treating “won’t launch” as a diagnosis:
- You press Play and nothing visible happens.
- The game process starts briefly and exits.
- You see a black screen or an error message.
- The demo launches but closes to desktop during play.
Record any error wording exactly. It can point to a more specific fix than a general startup checklist.

2. Check whether the PC meets the demo’s requirements
Find the demo’s official minimum and recommended system requirements on its store page or the publisher’s support site. Compare the listed operating system and hardware with your PC. Steam cautions that games may fail to launch when a machine is at or below the game’s requirements: Steam Support: Games do not run after “Preparing to Launch”.
A PC that does not meet the stated requirements may need a game-specific workaround or hardware change; a generic download is not a reliable fix. If your PC appears to meet them, continue with software and installation checks.

3. Update Windows and hardware drivers
Install available Windows updates and check for current drivers through the appropriate PC or component manufacturer’s official support channel. Steam includes Windows and computer-driver updates in its general launch checklist. Avoid driver-cleaner utilities and speculative system changes: the available symptoms alone do not establish that a particular driver or component is at fault.
4. Verify the demo files if it is installed through Steam
Steam’s built-in verification checks the installed game files and is a useful early step if the installation is incomplete or damaged. The labels below are for the Steam desktop client:

- Restart Steam and open Library.
- Right-click the demo and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files and allow the check to finish. Steam notes that verification may take several minutes: Steam Support: Verify Integrity of Game Files.
Steam says some local configuration files may normally fail verification and be replaced or left unchanged, so an individual file warning does not by itself prove the install is broken. For a demo installed through Epic, GOG, a standalone installer, or another launcher, use that platform’s own verification and support instructions rather than the Steam menu path.
5. Check for software interference without disabling protection broadly
Steam recommends checking whether non-essential software is interfering with the client or game. If you test this, close only non-essential programs you recognize, then retry the demo; avoid disabling antivirus or other security protection wholesale.

If the exact error says an executable is missing, security software may have quarantined a game file. Check its quarantine history and consult the game or launcher’s support guidance. Restore or allow a file only if you are confident it is the legitimate demo executable. Steam’s advice about this issue is specific to the “Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)” error.

When the general checks do not resolve the problem, look for support instructions for the exact game and symptom. Publisher guidance can be more specific than a platform-wide checklist. For example, Capcom’s Steam game troubleshooting mentions DirectX and Windows updates and notes that a CrashReport folder may be created after a crash. That folder is publisher-specific context, not a universal location or requirement.

Square Enix also recommends validating installation data for certain PC crash, startup, or black-screen problems in its PC troubleshooting guidance. Follow the instructions for your own game; do not assume another publisher’s path or procedure applies.
7. Escalate with details that help diagnose the problem
If the checks above fail, contact the game’s developer or a local PC technician, as Steam recommends. Include the details below so support can distinguish a launch failure from a crash during play:
- Demo name and version, if shown.
- Launcher or installation source.
- Windows version and your CPU, GPU, and RAM.
- The exact error text, or a description of what appears on screen.
- What action triggers the failure and whether it happens at startup or during play.
- A crash report only when the game’s support instructions request it; there is no universal crash-log location.
Without the game name, launcher, Windows version, error, and timing of the failure, it is not possible to identify a particular cause or promise that one generic fix will work.
