If a Nintendo DS game won’t start, check insertion and test another licensed Game Card before assuming the console is broken. If a game starts but won’t save, treat that as a separate problem: Nintendo says DS and DSi game saves do not use backup batteries. The steps below help you narrow down whether the issue follows one card or affects the system.

1. Reinsert the Game Card correctly

  1. Turn the DS off before inserting or removing a Game Card.
  2. Insert the card with its label facing down and slide it in until it clicks. It should go in easily; do not force it. See Nintendo’s insertion instructions.
  3. Turn the system on. If startup is set to manual, select the rectangle or card-slot indicator on the system menu to launch the game.

If the system says no Game Card is inserted, or the game still does not appear, continue with the tests below.

2. Find out whether the card or the DS is the likely cause

Test another licensed game

Turn the system off, then try a different licensed Game Card that is known to work. If several cards fail in the same DS, the system or its card slot becomes a more likely suspect. If other games work and just one card fails, that card becomes a more likely suspect. These results are clues, not proof of a specific fault. Nintendo’s Game Card troubleshooting also suggests trying the affected card in another DS if one is available.

Cross-test the affected card, if possible

Try the card in another compatible DS-family system. If it also fails there while other cards work, the fault is more likely to follow that card. If it works elsewhere, the original DS becomes a stronger suspect. A cross-test cannot identify which component has failed.

Inspect the contacts and slot

With the system off, look for visible dirt or bent pins on the card’s connector, and check the slot for foreign material. Nintendo warns that bent or contaminated pins can stop a game from working and may damage the DS. Do not force a card into the slot or probe inside it with metal objects. Remove unlicensed accessories while troubleshooting; Nintendo notes that unlicensed products are not tested for compatibility and may not work correctly with every game. See Nintendo’s recognition troubleshooting.

3. If the game launches but will not save

Do not assume the cartridge battery is dead

Nintendo Support Japan states that backup batteries are not used for saving Nintendo DS or DSi software. A dead cartridge backup battery therefore does not explain a DS or DSi game’s save problem. Nintendo does note that dirty cartridge terminals can interfere with saving and recommends trying terminal cleaning; its guidance does not guarantee that cleaning will restore a damaged save chip or recover lost progress. Read Nintendo’s answer about backup batteries in game software.

Check the game’s own save method

Follow the title’s instructions for saving. Some games may require saving at a particular point or choosing a save option from a menu; the method depends on the game. The official guidance cited here does not provide a universal way to recover missing or corrupted DS save data, so do not assume that lost progress can be restored.

4. Avoid rapid power cycling

Use normal shutdowns while testing rather than repeatedly switching the DS on and off in quick succession. Nintendo’s DS and DS Lite safety precautions warn that rapid power cycling may shorten the handheld battery’s life and cause Game Cards to lose stored information.

5. Decide whether the system needs replacing

If multiple known-working cards fail in the same DS after the checks above, the console may be at fault. Nintendo says it no longer accepts service requests for the original DS and directs owners to replace the system if its listed troubleshooting steps do not resolve the problem. Nintendo also says the DSi and 3DS support nearly the entire DS library. Before buying a used replacement, check compatibility for the specific game and any special peripheral it requires. Availability, condition, repair options, and prices vary by region and are not established here. See Nintendo’s recognition troubleshooting.
