An orange charging light can mean the system needs up to 15 minutes on the charger before it will turn on. If the light goes out immediately, blinks, or never appears, follow the matching checks below before assuming the battery is dead.
Check whether the 3DS is on but the screen is blank
Press the Power button once and look at the power LED. Nintendo says a solid blue light means the system is powered on, so a blank screen with a solid blue light is not the same as a console that has no power. A blinking blue light indicates a sleep-mode/display troubleshooting path; use Nintendo’s Nintendo 3DS troubleshooting guidance rather than treating it as a charging failure.
Check the outlet, adapter, cradle, and charging port
- Confirm the wall outlet works by testing it with another device.
- Inspect the adapter, cable, plug, charging cradle if used, and the console’s adapter port for visible damage. If an adapter or cradle is damaged, stop using it and replace that accessory.
- Use an officially licensed Nintendo adapter. Nintendo identifies WAP-002 as the 3DS-family AC adapter; check the model and compatibility before buying a replacement. See Nintendo’s adapter and charging troubleshooting.
- The adapter port may look slightly bent by design. Nintendo says that appearance alone does not indicate damage unless the plug cannot be inserted.
Reset the AC adapter and allow time to charge
- Unplug the adapter from both the console and the wall outlet.
- Leave it disconnected for 30 seconds. Check that the outlet works and the cable is not kinked or trapped.
- Reconnect the adapter securely and watch the charge light.
- If the orange light appears, leave the system charging. Nintendo says it can take up to 15 minutes before startup; a full charge takes about 3½ hours. An orange light indicates charging, not that the console will turn on immediately. See Nintendo’s charging instructions.
Follow the symptom shown by the charging light
Orange light stays on, but the console will not start
Keep it connected for up to 15 minutes before trying Power again. The light shows that charging is occurring, but it does not establish that the battery is healthy or that the console has no other fault.
Orange light turns off immediately or blinks
Nintendo Australia says an orange light that immediately goes dark may indicate that the battery is not connected correctly; a blinking recharge light can also point to battery connection. This symptom alone does not prove the battery is bad. If your particular model has a user-accessible battery, turn the system off, remove the battery, wait at least 10 seconds, then reseat it with the battery and console gold contacts aligned. Follow the model-specific directions in Nintendo Australia’s battery instructions. Do not force the cover or screws.

No orange light appears
Repeat the outlet and adapter checks, including the 30-second reset, and inspect the charging port and accessory for visible damage. If a known-good, compatible licensed adapter still produces no light, the symptom does not identify a single failed part; arrange inspection instead of assuming the port or internal power circuit is the cause.
Replace a battery only after matching the exact model
Battery access and compatible parts vary across the 3DS family. Nintendo specifies a #00 cross-head screwdriver for Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL, and Nintendo 2DS, and a #0 screwdriver for New Nintendo 3DS XL. The New Nintendo 2DS XL battery is not user-accessible. Check Nintendo’s model-specific battery access instructions before opening a battery cover.

CTR-003 is not a universal 3DS-family battery. iFixit lists its CTR-003 replacement battery for the original 2011 3DS, Nintendo 2DS, and New Nintendo 2DS XL. That compatibility statement is from iFixit’s listing, not a Nintendo endorsement; confirm your exact model and the part listing before ordering.

Arrange competent inspection if the console still will not charge or hold a charge after the checks above, or if the port or another component is physically damaged. A popping or crackling noise followed by the system powering off is also a service case; do not keep trying to charge it or attempt board-level repair based on symptoms alone. Nintendo’s U.S. support page says it no longer services several original and New 3DS-family models. Service status depends on model and region and can change, so confirm current availability with local Nintendo support: Nintendo U.S. repair information.
