Those are different symptoms, and Motorola’s settings and instructions vary by generation.
1. Identify your Moto G Stylus model
Before changing settings, find the phone’s model and generation in its About settings or device documentation. Motorola provides separate stylus guides for the original Moto G Stylus, the 2021 and 2022 models, and the 2024/2025 devices, so menu names and available options are not identical. Use the guide for your specific model rather than applying instructions for a different generation: Motorola Support.
2. If removing the stylus does not open a menu or note
Check the removal action in Settings > Stylus. The phone may be set to show nothing when you remove the pen, or the stylus menu may be disabled; either can look like the phone failed to recognize removal.
2024 and 2025 models
For the Moto G Stylus 5G (2024) and Moto G Stylus (2025), Motorola documents a When device is unlocked option. Turn it on if you want the stylus menu to appear when you remove the pen while the phone is unlocked. Original, 2021, and 2022 models
These generations also have model-specific stylus settings and removal actions, but the available controls differ. Follow the Motorola guide for the exact phone: original Moto G Stylus, Moto G Stylus (2021), or Moto G Stylus (2022).
3. If the stylus is detected but handwriting controls are missing
On supported 2024/2025 models, the handwriting control bar has a separate setting. If it does not appear after you tap a text field, open Settings > Stylus > Stylus Writing and turn it on, as described in Motorola’s stylus use guide. This setting controls the handwriting interface; it does not establish that a pen that cannot write or tap anywhere has been fixed.

4. If the stylus will not write or tap on the screen
Try the stylus in more than one app or screen area, and compare the same areas using your finger. Note whether the phone reacts to stylus removal even when screen input fails. These basic observations can help you explain the issue to support, but Motorola’s reviewed guides do not provide a validated test for distinguishing a failed stylus from a phone-screen digitizer fault.
5. Get model-specific support if the problem continues
If the right removal and writing settings do not address the symptom, open the support page for your exact device. Motorola’s Moto G Stylus (2025) support page provides troubleshooting, hardware-test, and repair or service options. Choose the support page that matches your own model if you have a different generation.

6. Check compatibility before buying another pen
Do not assume that a generic capacitive pen, Moto Pen, Moto Pen Pro, or Moto Pen Ultra will replace the built-in Moto G Stylus. Motorola’s Moto Pen compatibility list covers named devices for those separate pen families; it is not a Moto G Stylus replacement list. Confirm compatibility with your exact phone model through Motorola or the seller before buying. The available Motorola guides do not establish a cross-generation replacement part list or verify a specific replacement listing.
