Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A modem authentication failure usually means the device cannot verify the credentials or service settings required by your internet provider. The fix depends on whether you use DSL/PPPoE or a cellular modem: check the correct connection credentials for DSL, or the carrier-specific APN and SIM status for cellular. Do not substitute your Wi-Fi password for a DSL login or copy another carrier’s APN settings.
First identify what kind of connection is failing
Note the exact error message, your modem or gateway model, and your internet provider. Then identify the connection type:
- DSL/PPPoE: The modem or router authenticates to the provider using an internet connection username and password.
- Cellular: The modem uses a SIM and carrier-specific settings, including an Access Point Name (APN); the SIM may also be PIN-locked.
These settings are not interchangeable. An APN for one carrier or gateway may not work on another, and a DSL password is not necessarily your Wi-Fi or provider-account password.
Fix DSL or PPPoE authentication
Verify the ISP connection credentials
In your router or gateway settings, locate the WAN, Internet, or PPPoE connection screen and check the username and password entered there. Confirm the connection credentials with your ISP, then enter them in that screen. Google notes that PPPoE credentials may differ from both the Wi-Fi password and the credentials used to manage your ISP account. See Google’s PPPoE setup troubleshooting.

- ⚠️ CABLE INTERNET ONLY - NOT COMPATIBLE WITH: Fiber (Verizon FiOS, AT&T), DSL, Satellite, or Fixed Wireless. ONLY works with cable providers like Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox. Verify your internet type BEFORE purchase.
- 🚫 NO WiFi INCLUDED - ROUTER REQUIRED: This is a modem ONLY. You MUST buy a separate WiFi router to get wireless internet. Without a router, only ONE device can connect via Ethernet cable. This does NOT replace your current WiFi router.
- 🔌 CABLE INTERNET REQUIRED: Works EXCLUSIVELY with cable internet service (DOCSIS) from providers like Xfinity, Spectrum, or Cox. Will NOT work with fiber (Verizon FiOS, AT&T), DSL, satellite, or fixed wireless internet. Contact your ISP to confirm compatibility BEFORE purchasing.
- 🚀 MULTI-GIG PERFORMANCE: Supports internet plans up to 2.5 Gbps with 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port. Designed for plans 1 Gbps and faster from certified providers: Xfinity (up to 2.33 Gbps), Spectrum (1 Gbps), Cox (2 Gbps). Verify your plan speed and provider compatibility.
- 💡 SETUP REQUIREMENTS: You need: (1) Cable internet service, (2) Separate WiFi router with 2.5 Gbps port for full speeds, (3) ISP activation. This modem cannot create WiFi networks or connect multiple devices without additional equipment.
Take extra care with AT&T DSL passwords
For AT&T DSL, the Member ID and DSL network password are used for the broadband connection. AT&T says the DSL network password is generated by the system and stored in the modem or router; do not change it unless an AT&T technician directs you to. If the password was reset, update the modem with the new system-generated password. Follow AT&T’s instructions for updating the DSL network password and its Pace 4111 guidance.
Fix cellular modem authentication
Check the APN profile for your carrier and model
Review the APN, username, password, and authentication type in the cellular gateway’s settings. Confirm the required values in instructions for your specific carrier and device. For example, AT&T documents APN and authentication fields for its RG2102 gateway in the RG2102 user manual. T-Mobile lists fbb.home, blank username and password, and authentication type None for its Askey LTE gateway on its Askey LTE Gateway support page. Those are model-specific examples, not universal settings.

Check whether the SIM is PIN-locked
If the modem uses a SIM, check whether it is asking for a SIM PIN. Enter the correct PIN from your carrier’s instructions; avoid repeated guesses. Too many incorrect entries can require a PUK to unlock the SIM. Verizon explains SIM PIN and PUK handling for the USB730L in its SIM PIN instructions.
Restart the modem or gateway and retry
- Save any corrected connection settings, then unplug the modem or gateway from power.
- Wait 20 seconds before reconnecting it. This is the interval in AT&T’s published restart procedure.
- Allow the device to restart and reconnect. AT&T says startup can take up to 10 minutes; its restart instructions describe the procedure. Google also recommends restarting the modem and retrying PPPoE setup.
- Once the modem is online, retry the connection or setup once.
When to contact your provider
If the error remains after you have verified the relevant credentials or cellular settings and restarted, contact your ISP or carrier. Ask it to confirm the connection credentials, account status, and—if applicable—the device and SIM provisioning. For ongoing PPPoE errors, Google likewise directs customers to their ISP after the recommended checks and restart.
