If your microphone is too quiet, first check whether it’s quiet everywhere or only in one app. Confirm the mic is connected and unmuted, select it as the input, test its level in your device’s settings, then check the affected app’s microphone permission and input controls. Those checks can identify a setup or routing problem before you consider hardware trouble.
Start with the connection and the selected microphone
- Make sure the microphone or headset is fully connected and switched on. Check any physical or inline mute switch. For Bluetooth, confirm the device is paired and connected.
- Position the microphone as intended and make sure its openings are not blocked. On a phone, check for debris around the microphone openings.
- Confirm the device is using the microphone you mean to use. A computer or app may select a built-in mic instead of a headset, USB mic, or audio interface.
Microsoft’s Fix microphone problems guide recommends checking connection, position, mute, and the selected input. Logitech gives similar guidance for USB headsets: choose the headset as the computer’s input and adjust its microphone volume in the computer or chat app.
Test and raise the system input level
Microphone input level is different from speaker or headphone playback volume. If your system provides an input-level control, adjust the selected microphone there; turning up playback volume does not make the mic capture more sound.
Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Sound > Input.
- Select the microphone you want to use.
- Use Start test, speak normally, then play the sample to check the result. Adjust Input volume if needed and test again.
Windows 10
Open the microphone’s device properties from Windows sound settings and check its level controls. Depending on the device, Windows may show Microphone and Microphone Boost sliders. Available controls and their names vary by Windows version and hardware, so do not assume every microphone has a boost setting.

Mac
Check that the intended audio input is selected in the Mac’s sound settings, then test in an app that can record audio. If the app cannot access the input, use the permission check in the next section.
Check microphone permission and app routing
A microphone can work at the system level but still be unavailable to a particular app. If the problem is limited to one browser, call, meeting, or recording app, check that app’s permission and confirm it selected the same input you tested above.

Windows
Verify that microphone access is allowed in Windows privacy settings for both the device and the affected app. The exact labels can differ between Windows versions.
Mac
Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and allow access for the app you’re using. Apple notes that apps need audio-input access to record from the built-in microphone, an external USB microphone, or an audio interface.

Android
Check the affected app’s microphone permission in Android settings. Also check whether system-wide microphone access is blocked on your device. Menu names and availability vary by Android version and manufacturer; Google’s Change app permissions on your Android phone guide covers app permissions.
iPhone
If only one app has the problem, check its microphone permission. Apple recommends testing with Voice Memos and clearing debris from the microphone openings. If Voice Memos records normally but another app does not, Apple advises checking that app’s permission or contacting its developer.

If the microphone is quiet only in a call or recording app
Use the app’s own audio settings to confirm the selected input, unmute, and look for an input-level or gain control. A system test does not guarantee the app is using that same microphone or has an adequate app-level level.
- Google Meet on Android: Google’s troubleshooting guide says to verify the selected microphone, make sure you are not muted, allow microphone permission, and reconnect Bluetooth if relevant.
- USB headset: Select the headset as the input in the computer and, if necessary, in the chat application. The app may have its own microphone-volume control.
- USB microphone on a mobile device: RØDE says recording level for its USB microphones on iPhone, iPad, and Android is controlled by the recording app. Some apps do not provide manual input gain, so the app may offer no level slider to adjust. This guidance is specific to RØDE USB microphones and should not be assumed to describe every device or app.
Use the test result to choose the next step

A quiet result across multiple apps does not by itself identify the cause: the microphone, connector, driver, or other hardware may be involved. A replacement USB microphone is only an option, not a guaranteed fix; check compatibility with your device and app before buying.
