A dark screen does not necessarily mean your Mac Studio is off: the Studio relies on an external display, which may have lost power or signal while the Mac is still running or asleep. Check the monitor and its connection first, then use the Mac’s status light and response to decide whether you’re troubleshooting a display problem, an unresponsive Mac, or a blank-screen startup.
1. Check whether the problem is the display or the Mac
First make sure the monitor is switched on and connected to power. Check that its video cable is firmly connected at both the display and the Mac Studio. If the screen is still dark, disconnect the display from the Mac and its power source, then reconnect it. Apple’s guidance for troubleshooting display problems on a Mac also recommends connecting a display directly to the Mac when a hub or dock is in the path.
A cable or adapter must support the monitor’s required resolution and refresh rate. If you suspect the existing connection, try a compatible known-good cable as an isolation test. For example, a USB-C-to-DisplayPort cable is relevant only if your monitor has a DisplayPort input and the cable supports the display’s requirements; changing cables is a way to test the signal path, not a guaranteed fix for sleep problems.
2. Use the status light as a clue—not a diagnosis
Apple says the Mac Studio’s status indicator is solid white when the computer is on or sleeping, and off when it is turned off. A solid white light therefore confirms that the Mac is not simply powered off, but it cannot tell you whether the computer is asleep or actively running. - Solid white, screen dark: Continue checking the monitor, cable, adapter and any dock. The Mac may still be on or asleep.
- Light off: The Mac is off. If you did not turn it off, check power and follow the startup steps below.
- Amber or repeated flashing: Apple describes rapid amber flashing or solid amber as possible firmware recovery mode; repeated white flashes after turning on may indicate a hardware issue. These patterns warrant Apple’s status-light guidance or service rather than repeated display-cable changes.
3. If the Mac seems unresponsive, check power and restart it
If the Mac does not respond and you have ruled out the display connection, use Apple’s steps for a Mac that won’t turn on:
- Check that the power cable is undamaged and firmly connected to the Mac Studio and a working outlet.
- Disconnect accessories such as hubs, external drives and mobile devices.
- Press and hold the Mac Studio’s power button for about 10 seconds, then release it.
- Press the power button normally to try to turn the Mac on.
For Apple silicon Macs, do not try an Intel SMC reset. Apple says an SMC reset is not needed; its sleep-and-wake guidance recommends restarting the Mac for the SMC-related step.

4. If the problem returns, isolate software and connected devices
A successful restart that is followed by another wake failure calls for diagnosis rather than assuming a particular component is at fault. Apple’s sleep and wake troubleshooting guidance points to sleep settings, network access, sharing, background activity, software and connected devices as areas to review.
- Disconnect external devices and see whether the issue stops. Reconnect them one at a time to check whether the problem returns with a particular device or connection.
- Review the Mac’s sleep, network-access and sharing settings, as well as software and background activity. Setting names and locations can vary with macOS version.
- Change one thing at a time and observe whether the failure recurs. This helps distinguish a repeatable connection or software issue from an intermittent symptom.
5. If startup reaches a blank screen, use the Recovery path
A Mac that turns on but continues to show a blank screen needs startup troubleshooting, not just wake troubleshooting. Apple’s blank-screen startup guidance recommends shutting down with the power button and starting again. If the screen remains blank, try macOS Recovery. If Recovery opens, run Disk Utility repair; if the problem persists, reinstall macOS from Recovery.

Some Apple silicon cases may require a firmware revive or restore. If the Mac still will not turn on, or these startup steps do not resolve the blank screen, contact Apple or an authorized service provider. Do not open the Mac Studio to attempt an internal repair.
