Check that you have the guide for the exact set, compare the current step with the build, then identify any genuinely missing part by its element ID. LEGO provides free digital instructions and a service for requesting pieces missing from new sets; older or used sets may require a different route.
First, confirm the set and the step
- Find the set number. Check the box or booklet; LEGO uses this number to locate the correct instructions and replacement parts.
- Match the guide to your set. If you are using a digital or printed booklet, confirm its set number before comparing the build. A guide for a similar set may show different parts or steps.
- Recheck the current step before dismantling. Compare the illustration with your build from more than one angle. Check the orientation and color of each part, and account for every piece shown in the step. If the build differs, undo only the smallest section needed to correct it rather than dismantling a large assembly.
Find the right instructions
Use LEGO’s Building Instructions section to search for the set and download its guide. LEGO says, “All instructions can be downloaded for free in PDF format.” Open the guide for your exact set number and go to the step where the build became unclear.
If the printed booklet is missing or damaged, LEGO says you may request a replacement printed copy while available. Availability can vary, so the PDF is the dependable first option when you need to check a step.
Identify the piece that seems to be missing
Check the part list and element ID
Look at the parts list in the instructions, often found near the back. The element ID identifies a specific part. Use it to distinguish pieces that look similar, then compare the listed color with the part you need.

Use the molded design number if needed
Some pieces have a small design number molded into them. LEGO says the design number together with the color can help identify a piece. Element IDs and design numbers are different identifiers, so use the element ID from the parts list when available. LEGO’s replacement-parts service and Pick a Brick can be searched using piece identifiers.
Make sure it is actually absent
Before requesting a replacement, check the build area, the packaging, and any small bags or trays from the set. Then confirm the part has not already been used in an earlier step or placed in a different section of the build.

Request a piece missing from a new set
- Open LEGO’s replacement-pieces service and follow the flow for a missing piece from a new set.
- Search by the set number and select the part that is missing, using the parts list and element ID to verify the match.
- If the part is not listed or you cannot identify it, contact LEGO support. LEGO asks customers to provide “a complete description of the piece, the element ID number (provided in the list located at the back of the building instructions) and the set number.”
The online flow and availability may vary by region. LEGO’s guidance establishes a way to request a missing part, but does not establish that every part is in stock or that fulfillment terms are the same everywhere. Check the current service for your location.

Start by checking whether LEGO lists the part through its parts service or Pick a Brick. If it is unavailable there, a third-party compatible replacement may be an option. Match the part number, color, dimensions, and connection geometry, and check the seller’s compatibility details; fit and quality can vary. For a used set, distinguish a part missing from your purchase from one that was never included in the original set.

If the build is still unclear
- Return to the last step where the model matched the guide and compare each following step in sequence.
- Check whether a piece is hidden behind or under another part in the illustration, and rotate the model to match the guide’s viewpoint.
- Use the PDF’s zoom function to inspect small details, colors, and connection points.
- If a part or instruction discrepancy remains, contact LEGO support with the set number, the relevant step, and a clear description of what does not match.
