If it dies soon after unplugging, shuts down with charge remaining, or fails its manufacturer battery test, the battery may have lost capacity and need replacement. A reset or calibration can address certain software or charge-reading problems, but it cannot restore worn battery cells.
Why is my laptop battery not charging?
A charging problem does not automatically mean the battery is dead. The adapter may be disconnected, underpowered, or faulty; a charge-limit setting may be working as intended; or the laptop may be using power faster than its charger can supply it.
Check the outlet, charger, and connection
- Try a known-working wall outlet. Check that the adapter is firmly connected to the outlet, its cable and power brick, and the laptop.
- Inspect the cable, adapter, and charging port for visible damage. Stop using damaged equipment.
- Confirm that the charger meets the laptop’s required output. A lower-power adapter may charge slowly, fail to charge, or allow the battery to drain while plugged in. Microsoft’s guidance also identifies insufficient charger power as a cause of slow charging: Charging your Surface. Follow your laptop maker’s specifications for other models.
LG’s guidance likewise recommends checking the adapter connection and output when a laptop is not charging: LG laptop battery troubleshooting.
Check charge limits and power-management settings
Some laptops deliberately stop charging before 100% to reduce battery aging. For example, LG says its Extend Battery Life setting can cap charging at 80%. Check your manufacturer’s battery or power-management software and the charging indicator before assuming the battery has failed. The setting name and behavior vary by model.

Reduce USB-C power demand
If you charge over USB-C, disconnect unneeded peripherals and close demanding applications, then check whether the battery begins charging. A laptop can continue to lose charge if its workload draws more power than the adapter supplies, a possibility noted in LG’s troubleshooting guidance.
Let a cold laptop warm up
Move a cold laptop to a normal indoor environment and give it time to reach room temperature before checking charging again. LG says charging may slow below 10°C (50°F) in its guidance; that is an LG-specific figure, not a universal cutoff for all laptops.
Why does my laptop die when I unplug it?
If the laptop works on its charger but shuts down immediately or runs only briefly when unplugged, the battery may have little usable capacity left. First rule out a charging-path issue using the checks above, then run the battery diagnostic supplied by the laptop maker. A failed test, very short runtime, or shutdown while the system still reports charge are stronger reasons to seek service than a percentage reading alone.

Run the manufacturer’s battery test
Use the support app, built-in diagnostic, or instructions for your exact laptop model. HP recommends a hard reset followed by its Battery Check; the test can identify a battery problem and provide a failure ID for a repair request. Dell also directs users to diagnostics and battery-health information. Save any error or failure ID and include it when contacting support.
Treat runtime figures as model-specific guidance
Dell’s 2026 battery guidance lists runtime below 50% of original capacity as one reason to consider replacement, along with poor health status, diagnostic errors, unexpected shutdowns, swelling, or damage. Dell also says typical users may notice reduced runtime after 18–24 months, and users with heavy use may see reduced runtime after two to three years. These are Dell’s guidance for its products and described usage contexts—not universal battery-life standards. Actual runtime also depends on workload and settings.
Can I fix a laptop battery that won’t hold a charge?
You can fix some charging problems, but you cannot restore capacity lost through chemical wear. A charge limit, power-delivery problem, or inaccurate battery gauge may be addressable; degraded cells require replacement when their remaining runtime is no longer useful.

Calibrate only to correct an inaccurate percentage
Calibration is for a charge estimate that appears inaccurate, not for bringing an old battery back to life. HP describes calibration as resetting the gauge so Windows can display the charge level more accurately. Follow the manufacturer’s procedure only if it recommends calibration for your model. It does not reverse cell aging.
Do not use a reset as a battery repair
A manufacturer-recommended hard reset can be part of troubleshooting, as in HP’s Battery Check guidance, but it does not repair degraded cells. If diagnostics report failure or the laptop still cannot meet your runtime needs after charging issues are ruled out, consider replacement or service.
How do I know if my laptop battery needs replacing?
Replacement is reasonable when the manufacturer’s diagnostic reports failure, the battery no longer provides enough runtime for your needs, or the laptop shuts down unexpectedly while on battery. A swollen or damaged battery needs immediate attention rather than more troubleshooting. Warranty coverage and repair options depend on the manufacturer, exact model, market, and purchase terms.

Check warranty and model-specific replacement options
Before buying a battery, identify the exact laptop model and check its warranty and manufacturer or authorized repair options. Dell directs users to identify their system to find batteries for that system and cautions that it cannot verify the safety or performance of third-party batteries. A replacement must match the exact laptop model and part requirements; do not rely on a broad brand or series match.
Choose between a battery, a repair, and another laptop
For a non-swollen battery, whether to replace it yourself depends on the exact service manual, battery accessibility, warranty, and your repair experience. Some laptops have externally removable batteries; many current models contain internal packs. Do not follow generic disassembly instructions that are not for your model.

What to do if your laptop battery is swollen
A swollen battery is a stop-use condition. Warning signs include a bulging case, separated seams, a raised keyboard or trackpad, or a laptop that rocks on a flat surface. Do not press, bend, puncture, disassemble, or pry against the battery. Disconnect external power if you can do so without disturbing the pack, stop using the laptop, and contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider for replacement and disposal instructions.
Do not attempt to remove an adhered or stuck swollen battery yourself. Dell advises against using, pressing, puncturing, or disassembling a swollen battery, and HP also provides guidance on swollen batteries. Follow the service provider’s instructions for your model and location.
