Start with Airplane mode, the selected Wi-Fi network, and its password. Then check whether other devices can use that network, verify that your Kindle supports its Wi-Fi band and security settings, and restart the Kindle and router. Try another network before considering a factory reset.
1. Check Wi-Fi settings, network name, and password
- Turn off Airplane mode and make sure Wi-Fi is enabled in the Kindle’s network settings.
- Select the right network. Check the network name (SSID) carefully, especially if your router lists separate names for different bands or guest access.
- Enter the current password again. A saved password may be outdated or mistyped. If you do not know it, check with the person who set up the network, the router label or manual, or a device already connected. See Amazon’s guide to locating your Wi-Fi password.
- Try another device on the same Wi-Fi. If it also cannot connect, the problem may be the network or internet service rather than the Kindle.
- Move closer to the router. Keep the Kindle away from potential sources of wireless interference, such as microwaves and baby monitors.
Amazon’s Kindle Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide recommends checking these settings and the network connection before moving on to more disruptive steps.
2. Check whether the Kindle supports your Wi-Fi band and security mode
A Kindle may not connect if the router is using a band or security setting the device does not support. Amazon says Kindle e-readers do not support 6 GHz Wi-Fi. It also says Kindle devices released before 2021 do not support 5 GHz Wi-Fi or WPA3 encryption. These limits vary by device generation, so identify your Kindle model before changing router settings; do not assume every Kindle has the same compatibility.
If the Kindle is older, check whether the router offers a compatible network—often a 2.4 GHz network with a supported security mode. Prefer changing or enabling a compatible network option over weakening security for the entire router without understanding the consequences. Amazon’s compatibility guidance has the relevant limits.

3. Restart the Kindle and home network
Restart the Kindle
- Hold the Kindle’s power button until a power dialog appears or the screen goes blank.
- Keep holding the button for 40 seconds, then release it. Wait for the Kindle to restart and try Wi-Fi again.
Use Amazon’s Kindle restart instructions if you need model-specific guidance.
Restart the modem and router
- Unplug power from the modem and router for several minutes.
- Reconnect the modem first and wait for it to connect to the internet.
- Reconnect the router and wait for the home network to return fully.
- Restart connected devices if needed, then try the Kindle again.
For the full sequence, see Amazon’s home-network restart instructions.

4. Check for Kindle software or registration issues
Check whether your Kindle has the latest software available for its model, then retry the connection. Software versions differ by device, so use Amazon’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting page to find the model-specific update information rather than applying a version meant for another Kindle.
If Wi-Fi connects but registration or account access fails, check that the device’s date and time are correct and that you are using the right Amazon account sign-in details. Amazon’s Kindle registration help covers registration problems.

5. Try a different network to isolate the problem
Connect the Kindle to another Wi-Fi network, such as a smartphone personal hotspot. If it connects there, the Kindle can use Wi-Fi and the original network is the more likely cause. If several devices cannot connect to the home Wi-Fi, contact your internet service provider.
Use these results to decide what to check next:
- Kindle connects near the router but not in its usual location: coverage may be weak in that spot. Test before buying a range extender; one will not fix a wrong password, unsupported band or security mode, or a Kindle fault.
- Kindle connects to a hotspot but not home Wi-Fi: revisit the home router’s network name, password, band, and security settings.
- Other devices also fail on home Wi-Fi: focus on the router or internet connection and contact your provider if the connection remains unavailable.
- Kindle fails on multiple networks: continue with software and device checks, then consider Amazon support before resetting.
If you use a mesh system or extender, the network name, security type, and password need to be consistent across the relevant bands and network nodes for roaming to work as intended. Amazon discusses this in its Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.

6. Add a hidden network or complete a hotspot sign-in
Hidden Wi-Fi network
If your router does not broadcast its network name, use the Kindle’s Other network option to enter the network details manually. Follow Amazon’s internet connection instructions.
Public Wi-Fi or a hotspot with a welcome page
Some public networks require a separate sign-in through a welcome page, voucher, PIN, or one-time password after the Kindle joins Wi-Fi. If the page does not appear automatically, try opening a simple website to prompt it, then complete the network’s sign-in.

7. Consider a factory reset only as a last resort
If the Kindle still will not connect after the checks above, a factory reset is a later option—not a first troubleshooting step. It removes device settings and may affect content stored on the Kindle. Before proceeding, read Amazon’s Kindle user and quick-start guides for the instructions and consequences that apply to your model. Do not reset until you understand what may be removed.
