First identify the guitar’s model and the platform it was made for: Rock Band 4 and older Rock Band guitars can use different connection methods, and Xbox and PlayStation instruments are not interchangeable. Then check power, follow the matching pairing steps, and confirm the game supports the controller. A guitar can pair with a console or PC yet still fail to work in a particular game.
Identify the guitar and where the connection fails
Before trying to pair it, find the model name or label on the guitar and identify its intended platform. Note whether it is a Rock Band 4 instrument, an older legacy guitar, or another model, and whether it connects by Bluetooth or through a model-specific wireless USB adapter. Do not assume a generic Bluetooth receiver or USB dongle will work.
Also pinpoint the failure: does the guitar fail to appear in the PC or console’s device list, does it pair but disconnect, or does the system see it while the game does not? Those are different problems and call for different fixes.
Check power before pairing
For a battery-powered guitar, install fresh batteries before troubleshooting. The official Rock Band 4 PS4 instructions say to use fresh batteries; a red indicator on the guitar means they should be replaced. Low power can make pairing unreliable, so do this before repeating sync attempts.

Pair a Rock Band 4 guitar with a PS4
This Bluetooth pairing path applies to a Rock Band 4 instrument on PS4; it is not the legacy-adapter procedure.
- On the PS4, open Settings > Devices > Bluetooth Devices.
- Hold the PlayStation button on the guitar, then press and hold the small wireless button on the guitar—the white button where an amp plug would be.
- When the instrument appears in the PS4 device list, select it and assign a profile.
- Wait for the guitar’s indicator to turn solid blue. Epic Games’ Rock Band 4 PS4 syncing instructions identify a solid blue light as connected. If it continues blinking, repeat the pairing steps.
- Open Rock Band 4 and press the guitar’s Options button to join.
Sync a legacy Rock Band guitar with its original adapter
Older legacy Rock Band guitars require their original, model-appropriate wireless adapter. Plug the adapter into the console, press its sync button, and then press the guitar’s sync button. Epic Games’ legacy guitar support instructions say a successful connection shows solid lights on both the adapter and guitar.

If the lights keep blinking, try these checks:
- Remove other instruments while pairing so they do not interfere with the attempt.
- Try another USB port for the adapter.
- Try pressing the guitar’s sync button first, followed by the adapter or console button.
If repeated attempts with the correct adapter and fresh batteries still fail, hardware may be involved. Epic Games notes that a persistent blinking connection after multiple sync attempts can point to a hardware issue.
If the guitar keeps disconnecting
For a PS4 wireless guitar that disconnects frequently despite fresh batteries, Harmonix provides a wireless guitar firmware update intended to address potential connection issues. Its published procedure requires a Bluetooth-capable PC running Windows 7, 8.1, or 10, or a Mac running OS X 10.10 or later. These are requirements from the legacy instructions; confirm the updater and download are still available before attempting the procedure.

Harmonix says an Xbox One Wireless Guitar does not need a firmware update. Do not apply the PS4 procedure to an Xbox guitar.
If the system connects but the game does not recognize the guitar
Pairing with a PC or console does not guarantee that every game or mode supports the instrument. Check the selected game’s controller support separately before treating this as a hardware fault.

For Fortnite Festival’s Pro Lead and Pro Bass modes, Epic’s v30.00 announcement, published May 23, 2024, says players can use any console platform or PC without a supported guitar controller. Keyboard-and-mouse keybinds and controller-to-keyboard remapping are available as alternatives. This is an input fallback for those modes, not a repair for a guitar that will not pair.

Consider replacement only after confirming the guitar, platform, batteries, and required adapter or pairing method. A missing original adapter or a platform mismatch will not be fixed by buying an arbitrary wireless receiver.
