If your gaming mouse moves too far with each motion, lower its DPI; if it skips or stops tracking, first test a different surface and inspect the sensor opening. Then check power and connection. These symptoms have different likely causes, so work through the checks below before assuming the mouse is damaged.
1. Is the cursor too fast, or is tracking dropping out?
When the cursor moves smoothly and consistently but travels farther than you expect, check sensitivity settings. That is different from skipping, freezing, or failing to follow the mouse’s movement, which calls for surface, sensor, power, or connection checks.
Lower DPI first
If your mouse has gaming configuration software, open it and reduce the DPI setting. Logitech recommends lowering DPI in its mouse software for excessive cursor movement (Logitech Support). The exact controls depend on the mouse model and software.
Adjust pointer speed in Windows if needed
If lowering DPI is not enough, reduce Windows pointer speed. Microsoft documents pointer-speed adjustment as a general mouse troubleshooting step (Microsoft Support). Avoid treating high sensitivity by itself as evidence of a faulty sensor.

2. Test whether the surface is causing skips
Move the mouse on a plain sheet of white paper or on a different mouse pad. If tracking improves, the surface you were using is a likely contributor. This is a free diagnostic; try paper or a pad you already own before buying anything.
Logitech advises avoiding surfaces that are glass or see-through, reflective, wood-grained or grooved, or very glossy (Logitech Support). A new pad is not guaranteed to fix the problem, and no particular pad model is established as a solution.

3. Check the sensor opening for debris
Turn the mouse over and inspect the sensor opening for dust or lint. Logitech recommends checking for debris when the cursor does not follow the mouse’s movement (Logitech Support). The cited guidance does not specify a cleaner or call for disassembly, so do not assume either is necessary.
4. Check power and receiver placement on a wireless mouse
Confirm the mouse has power
Recharge it or replace its batteries, as appropriate. Microsoft also recommends checking the reported battery status when a mouse responds slowly or incorrectly (Microsoft Support).

Try a closer receiver position
For its products, Logitech recommends keeping the wireless receiver within 20 cm of the mouse and at least 2 meters from routers and other 2.4 GHz wireless devices (Logitech Support). These are Logitech’s recommendations, not universal distance limits. Temporarily disconnecting nearby wireless devices can also help you check whether interference is involved.
5. Check the connection and isolate the computer
For a wired mouse
Connect it directly to a computer USB port rather than through a hub. Logitech lists a direct USB-port test among its steps for a gaming mouse that does not track reliably (Logitech Support).

For a Bluetooth mouse
Check that the mouse is powered on and paired. If needed, pair it again, then test it with another computer to help determine whether the problem is specific to the original PC. Microsoft also recommends restarting the PC when pointer response is slow or incorrect (Microsoft Support).

Some mouse software can tune the sensor for a particular surface, but this is not a standard feature across all gaming mice. Logitech documents surface tuning for supported gaming mice in Logitech Gaming Software version 8.87 or later; its instructions cover choosing a preset or creating a custom surface setting (Logitech Support). Check current instructions for your exact model before looking for this option.

7. When to contact the manufacturer
If the problem continues across surfaces after you have checked the sensor opening, power, and connection, identify the exact mouse model and consult its current manufacturer support page. The checks above can help narrow the issue, but they do not establish a universal diagnosis for a damaged sensor or a single repair procedure.
