If your Freely box is already set up, open Settings > Connection and select your Wi-Fi network again. If it connects but still will not stream, check whether the problem affects other apps or devices, then work through Freely’s service, software and restart checks.
Reconnect the Freely box to Wi-Fi
- Check that your router is powered on and has an internet connection.
- On the Freely device, open Settings > Connection, choose your Wi-Fi network and enter its password. Menu names can vary by TV or streaming-device maker. See Freely’s internet connection guidance for the connection steps.
- If you are setting up the device for the first time, select your network during setup and enter the Wi-Fi password. The setup flow differs by device; consult the manufacturer’s instructions if the menus do not match.
Freely supports a wired Ethernet/LAN connection as an alternative to Wi-Fi and recommends using one when available. Check that your specific box has a LAN port and can reach the router before getting a cable. Ethernet can avoid a weak wireless signal, but it will not fix a broadband outage or a Freely service problem.
Find out whether the problem is Wi-Fi, broadband or the box
- Try another app on the Freely box. If it also cannot get online, the problem may be the box’s connection rather than Freely alone.
- Try a phone or tablet on the same Wi-Fi network. If several devices cannot access the internet, restart the router; contact your broadband provider if the outage or weak connection continues.
- Check the box’s Wi-Fi signal and your broadband speed. Freely recommends at least 10 Mbps for viewing; this figure is from Freely’s support page checked in 2026, which does not state a publication date. HD video needs more bandwidth than SD, so a marginal connection may cause buffering or pixelation.
If other devices work and only the Freely box has trouble, return to its Wi-Fi network selection and check for device software updates.
If the box connects but live TV or streams fail
Check for a Freely issue and note any error code
Check Freely’s help and alerts for known issues, and write down the full error code. Freely error codes begin with ETV; if the code has a different prefix, Freely advises checking with the device manufacturer.

Update the device and Freely software
Check for a device software update and, where available, use the Freely software-update setting. Freely and player apps generally update automatically, but updates can also be checked manually using the device-specific instructions in Freely’s software and streaming guidance.
Restart, then reinstall only if needed
- Turn off the TV or streaming device with its remote, wait 30 seconds, then turn it on again.
- If the problem remains, switch it off at the wall for about five minutes before restarting.
- If streaming still fails, follow Freely’s device-specific instructions to reinstall the Freely app or operator application. Use Freely’s troubleshooting guidance for the relevant steps.
- Treat a factory reset as a later option: it can reset device settings. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your model before doing this.
If only an on-demand player app fails
If live TV or other apps work but one player does not, check that app’s sign-in separately. Freely lists BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, 5 and U as examples of player apps. Sign in again or reset forgotten credentials through the player’s app or website, then check for app and device updates. If the player remains unavailable while the network and other apps work, contact that player’s support or the device manufacturer.
