Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf a UPI payment says “failed” or “pending,” check both the transaction in your payment app and the linked bank account. The app’s status tells you how the payment is being reported; your bank statement or debit alert shows whether money left your account. What to do next depends on whether you sent a transfer or paid a merchant.
Check the UPI status and your bank account
- Open the payment’s transaction history. Select the payment and note its displayed status, amount, date and time, payee, and transaction or reference ID if shown.
- Check the linked bank account. Look at its statement or debit alerts for the same amount and transaction date. An app error or missing confirmation alone does not establish whether the bank debited you.
- Match the two records. If the app says failed but the bank shows a debit, save the transaction details and follow the failed-payment steps below. NPCI says users can check transaction status and raise a grievance through a participating bank’s UPI app: NPCI UPI FAQs.
App menus and wording differ. Where available, select the transaction and use its help, raise-issue, or grievance option. NPCI’s UPI Help guidance illustrates a failed-merchant-transaction complaint flow that provides a reference number and lets the customer check complaint status.
Choose the right route for your transaction
| What happened | What to check or do | Applicable timing |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer failed; your account was debited; beneficiary was not credited | Raise the issue with your UPI app or bank. RBI’s table addresses a transfer where the beneficiary bank cannot credit the beneficiary. | Reversal by T+1; ₹100 per day for delay beyond T+1, under the RBI circular. |
| Merchant payment debited; merchant did not receive confirmation | Ask the merchant whether its system recorded the payment. Raise the payment complaint through your app or bank. | Reversal by T+5; ₹100 per day for delay beyond T+5, under the RBI circular. |
| Transfer is pending; your account was debited; beneficiary has not been credited | Check the status and allow for settlement. This is not the same situation as a final failed merchant payment. | NPCI says the beneficiary may receive the money within 48 hours after the beneficiary bank completes settlement. |
| You suspect an unauthorised or fraudulent debit | Contact your bank promptly. NPCI’s UPI Help guidance directs customers reporting a fraudulent transaction to the bank. | Do not wait for the ordinary failed-payment timelines before reporting suspected fraud. |
In the RBI time limits, T means the calendar date of the transaction. Thus T+1 and T+5 are calendar-day deadlines, not business-day counts. The reversal and compensation timelines above are from the RBI circular on failed transactions.
If a failed payment was debited
NPCI says money from a failed UPI transaction should be refunded. Its FAQ advises contacting your bank if the refund has not arrived within one hour. Treat this as advice about an unreversed failed debit—not as a replacement for the RBI’s separate T+1 transfer and T+5 merchant-payment deadlines. The relevant facts are the transaction type and whether the beneficiary received the transfer or the merchant received confirmation.
