First identify the console and controller model: pairing steps are not interchangeable. For a Switch Joy-Con that works while attached but will not connect wirelessly, reset its sync and pair it again. For a PS5 DualSense, connect it to the console with the included USB cable and press the PS button; if it still has connection trouble, use the controller’s reset button. For Xbox, check charge and compatibility, then use the current instructions for your specific controller at Xbox Support—the button sequence is model-specific.
Before troubleshooting, identify what is failing
Check the console and controller model, then distinguish among three problems: the controller will not pair wirelessly, it is not recognized while physically attached, or a particular game does not support the controller or configuration. A pairing reset may not fix a game-compatibility issue.
- Check that the controller has charge and is close to the console.
- If a wireless connection is unreliable, reduce potential interference where practical.
- Use the procedure for the specific console below; do not assume another platform’s pairing steps apply.
Fix a Switch Joy-Con that will not connect wirelessly
These steps apply when the Joy-Con works correctly while attached to the Switch but does not sync or register as a wireless controller. Nintendo’s guidance is in Joy-Con Does Not Pair as a Wireless Controller.
- Press the Joy-Con’s SYNC button once, then press another button to turn it on again.
- If it still will not connect, delete the console’s pairing information for wireless controllers, then pair the Joy-Con again.
- Move the controller closer to the console, reduce possible wireless interference, and check that the Joy-Con battery is not low or depleted.
- If the problem happens only in a game, check that the game supports the controller configuration you are using and that the player limit has not been exceeded.
If these steps do not resolve the wireless issue, Nintendo says the Joy-Con may need service.

Check the Bluetooth-audio controller limit
When a Bluetooth audio device is connected, Nintendo says no more than two wireless controllers can be paired to the Switch. To pair controllers, make sure the console has the latest system update, open Controllers > Change Grip/Order, hold SYNC on a controller for at least one second, then press L and R or SL and SR together on the controllers being used. Pair or reset a PS5 DualSense controller
For initial pairing, PlayStation’s procedure is to turn on the PS5, connect the DualSense with the USB cable that came with it, and press the PS button. After the controller has enough charge, disconnect the cable to use it wirelessly. A DualSense pairs with only one PS5 console at a time; to use it with another PS5, pair it with that console. Reset the controller if connection problems continue
- Turn off the PS5 and disconnect the controller from the USB cable.
- Use a pin or similar tool to press and hold the reset button in the small hole next to the Sony logo on the controller’s back for at least five seconds.
- Connect the DualSense to the PS5 with the official USB cable, then press the PS button.
- If you can operate the console, update its system software to the latest available version.
PlayStation’s pairing procedure calls for the included USB cable. If you do not have it or it is unsuitable, a replacement must support data transfer as well as charging; not every USB-C charging cable transfers data. Check the connector and compatibility before buying one.
What to try when an Xbox controller will not connect
Xbox-specific console pairing and recovery instructions are not established here, so do not use the Switch SYNC or PS5 USB-pairing sequence as a substitute. Check that the controller has charge and is intended for your console, then find the current model-specific procedure through Xbox Support. Xbox instructions can vary by controller model.

When to contact support or seek service
If the platform’s official pairing and reset steps do not fix the problem, follow that platform’s support or repair route. Nintendo identifies service as a possible next step for a Joy-Con that still fails its wireless checks; PlayStation directs users to its support and repair flow if DualSense troubleshooting does not resolve the issue.
