If you see “camera not found,” “camera not detected,” “No cameras are attached,” or a meeting app says it cannot detect a camera, first test the camera in your computer’s built-in camera app. If it works there, check the failing app’s camera permission and device selection. If it fails everywhere, check system privacy settings, physical controls, the connection, and drivers.
1. Find out whether the problem is system-wide or limited to one app
Open the built-in camera app—Camera on Windows or Photo Booth on macOS. Google Meet recommends this comparison because it helps distinguish a system or hardware problem from an issue in a particular website or app (Google Meet camera troubleshooting).
- The camera works in the built-in app: Check camera access and device selection in the browser or meeting app that fails.
- The camera fails in the built-in app too: Check system permissions, physical controls, the connection, and—on Windows—whether the camera is detected in Device Manager.
2. Check the camera itself and its connection
If you use an external webcam, unplug it and reconnect it securely. Check that the cable and USB port are undamaged; if possible, try another port. A loose connection can make Windows report that it cannot detect a camera (Microsoft’s Windows camera troubleshooting guide).
Also check for a physical privacy shutter, camera switch, or keyboard shortcut that disables the camera. These controls vary by device, and some laptops have an indicator light or a switch on the top or side (Google Meet camera troubleshooting).

3. Allow camera access in your operating system
Windows 11 and Windows 10
In Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera. Turn on Camera access and access for the app you are using. Browsers and many meeting programs are desktop apps, so also enable Let desktop apps access your camera. On Windows 10, the corresponding page is generally Settings > Privacy > Camera; labels can vary by version (Microsoft Support).
If a camera setting is unavailable or disabled by your organization, contact your device administrator rather than trying to override its policy.

macOS
Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and allow access for the app that needs the camera. On macOS Catalina or later, check Screen Time > Content & Privacy restrictions and app limits as well. After granting permission, quit and reopen the app if it still cannot access the camera (Apple Support: If the built-in camera isn’t working on your Mac).
4. If only a browser or one meeting app cannot find the camera
Camera access can be blocked at more than one level: by operating-system privacy settings, by the browser’s permission for the specific website, or by missing camera drivers. In the browser, allow camera access for the exact site and select the camera you intend to use. Then close other apps and browser tabs that may already be using it, such as Teams, Zoom, or the system camera app. Microsoft Edge documents these separate permission and driver layers, as well as possible conflicts from extensions and organization policies (Microsoft Edge camera privacy settings).

5. If Windows does not detect the camera
Windows error 0xA00F4244 means “The system cannot detect the camera,” according to Microsoft Support. A disconnected external camera or privacy settings may be responsible; the code alone does not identify which one (Microsoft Support).

- Open Device Manager and look under Cameras, Imaging devices, or Sound, video and game controllers.
- If the camera is listed, check that it is enabled. If it is absent, choose Action > Scan for hardware changes, then restart Windows.
- If the camera is listed but still fails, consider rolling back a driver that was recently changed. Another option is to uninstall the camera device in Device Manager, scan for hardware changes, and let Windows reinstall it.
- If the problem continues, follow the camera maker’s driver and troubleshooting guidance.
Microsoft also documents switching some USB webcams to the built-in USB Video Device UVC driver. This is not a universal first step: it requires administrator rights and may remove specialized camera features. Use it only when appropriate for the webcam and its manufacturer’s guidance (Microsoft Support).

Windows camera errors do not all mean that the camera is missing. Microsoft associates these codes with different conditions (Microsoft’s error-code guide):

- 0xA00F4243: Another app may be using the camera.
- 0x80070005: Access is denied; check permissions.
- 0xA00F4292: A policy restriction may be blocking access.
- 0xA00F4246: Security software may have locked the camera.
- 0xA00F4294: The video failed to start.
Use the message and code to choose the relevant troubleshooting branch rather than treating every camera error as a driver failure.
When to contact an administrator, manufacturer, or repair service
Contact your organization’s administrator if a managed device’s camera controls are blocked by policy. If a camera remains absent after connection, permission, and driver checks, consult the computer or camera manufacturer. Apple says persistent failures of a Mac’s built-in camera may require service; for Intel Macs its guidance also includes resetting the SMC, while it recommends restarting Apple silicon Macs (Apple Support).
