Find the process driving the load before changing browser settings. A busy tab, extension, background process, or graphics workload can each raise CPU use, and the right fix depends on which one is responsible. Start with the browser’s task manager, then test targeted, reversible fixes before considering a reset.
1. Identify what is using CPU
Check whether CPU use stays high for more than a brief spike, then open the browser’s own process view and sort by CPU. A single snapshot can identify a likely cause, but it cannot establish that a persistent defect exists.
- Microsoft Edge: Press Shift+Esc to open Browser Task Manager. Its list can show whether a tab, extension, subframe, or utility process is responsible. If a process is clearly associated with a tab you do not need, close the tab or end that process, then see whether overall use drops. Microsoft’s Edge high CPU or memory guidance explains the process view.
- Mozilla Firefox: Enter
about:processesin the address bar or press Shift+Esc. Sort by CPU to find busy tabs or processes. Firefox’s Extensions row combines all enabled extensions into one content-process entry, so it does not identify each extension’s individual CPU use. See Mozilla’s Firefox Task Manager documentation. - Google Chrome on Windows: Use Windows Task Manager or Process Explorer to locate a high-CPU process. The available guidance does not establish a Chrome-specific task-manager shortcut or detailed procedure, so use the system process list rather than guessing at one.
Record which sites or extensions were active and whether the load returns after you close a suspected tab. This helps distinguish a one-off workload from a repeatable problem.
2. Test extensions and page content
Extensions can add CPU work, and some pages may be responsible even when the browser itself is behaving normally. Temporarily disable extensions and watch CPU use. If it falls, re-enable extensions one at a time and observe after each change to narrow down the cause.

Edge
Turn off extensions temporarily, then restore them individually if that reduces CPU use. Check the browser’s process list again as you do so; it can help connect a change to a process.
Firefox
Use Troubleshoot Mode for a comparison with extensions and themes temporarily disabled. If CPU use improves, return to normal mode and isolate extensions by re-enabling them individually. The process list aggregates extension activity, so do not rely on it to distinguish one extension from another. Mozilla also recommends checking whether intrusive page content or a particular site is driving the load; see Firefox’s high memory and CPU troubleshooting guidance.

3. Check graphics acceleration when video or graphics are involved
If high CPU use coincides with video playback, WebGL, or canvas-heavy content, check whether the browser is using hardware acceleration. Microsoft notes that “Software rendering of video, WebGL, and canvas content increases CPU usage” in its Edge high CPU or memory support article, dated May 29, 2026.
Edge
Enter edge://gpu in the address bar and inspect whether graphics features are hardware-accelerated or software-only. If they are software-only, update the graphics driver and confirm graphics acceleration is enabled in system settings. Microsoft’s instructions are in its Edge troubleshooting guidance.

Firefox
Check Firefox’s hardware-acceleration setting and make sure the graphics driver is current, following Mozilla’s CPU and memory troubleshooting steps. If you toggle acceleration as a test, observe the change and restore the previous setting if performance gets worse.
4. Look for background browser activity and idle tabs
If CPU use continues after browser windows close, check whether background extensions or apps are still running. Edge includes a setting to stop background extensions and apps when the browser closes. Its performance features can also help find and sleep inactive tabs. Microsoft documents these controls in its high CPU troubleshooting article and Edge performance-features guide.

Before enabling sleeping tabs, review the always-active site list if a site needs to keep running. Edge’s Performance detector can help identify background-tab load; sleeping or closing tabs is preferable to leaving unnecessary work active.

Install available browser updates, close tabs and applications you do not need, and restart the browser. If the problem persists, restart the computer and check CPU use again. These steps address transient problems without immediately changing browser settings.

Edge repair and reset
For broader Edge problems, Microsoft also recommends a malware scan and provides a built-in Repair option; see its general Edge troubleshooting steps. Treat Settings reset as a later option: Microsoft says it preserves bookmarks, history, and saved passwords, but resets pinned tabs, the startup page, search engine, and extensions. Review the changes before proceeding using the Edge reset guidance.
Firefox refresh
Mozilla lists Refresh Firefox as an option for restoring the profile’s default state while preserving essential information. Because it changes the browser’s profile state, use it only after process and extension checks, and review Mozilla’s troubleshooting guidance before proceeding.
What not to do first
- Do not buy RAM just because CPU use is high. Mozilla’s RAM guidance is conditional on memory use staying close to the system maximum; that is a different diagnostic finding from high CPU use.
- Avoid generic PC-cleaner or performance-optimizer utilities. Mozilla advises caution with third-party programs that promise to increase computer performance.
- Do not reset the browser before identifying the cause. Process inspection and temporary extension tests are more targeted and easier to undo.
Exact menus and behavior can vary by browser version, and organization-managed settings may restrict available controls. The detailed CPU-specific procedures cited here are strongest for Edge and Firefox.
