First check whether everything records black or only one app or video. If an ordinary screen—such as Settings or your home screen—records correctly, the app may restrict recording. If ordinary content is black too, check device permissions and recorder settings, then separate a capture problem from a file-playback problem.
1. Test whether the problem affects the whole screen
- Record a home screen, Settings page, or another ordinary, non-protected screen.
- Play that test recording. If it looks normal, repeat the test in the app where the problem occurs.
- Compare the results. If only one app or video is black, check that app’s recording restrictions. Apple Support notes that some apps may not allow audio or video recording. A recorder setting change is not a reliable way around a restriction.
If ordinary content is black as well, continue with the checks for your device below.
2. Check your device’s recording controls and permissions
iPhone or iPad
- Start a screen recording from Control Centre and check whether the result appears in Photos.
- Turn off screen mirroring while testing. Apple says screen recording and screen mirroring cannot run at the same time.
- If the recording works everywhere except one app, treat that as an app-specific restriction rather than a general recorder failure.
Mac
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording.
- Allow the relevant capture app. macOS provides a permission control for each app.
- Try recording ordinary screen content again. If the permission was already enabled, continue to the desktop checks below.
Android
- Try the device’s built-in screen recorder and compare a recording of ordinary content with the affected app.
- If Google’s general screen-recording instructions do not match your phone or do not solve the problem, consult your device manufacturer’s support instructions. Screen-recorder behavior and controls can differ among manufacturers.
Windows and other desktop recorders
There is no single Windows setting path established for every recorder and version. Check the documentation for the specific capture app you use, especially for its screen-capture permissions. Use the symptom-based checks below rather than changing unrelated system settings at random.
3. Investigate desktop capture conflicts
If a desktop recorder shows ordinary content as black, work through these possible causes one at a time. They are troubleshooting areas, not guaranteed fixes.

- Permissions: Confirm the recorder has the screen-recording access required by your operating system and app.
- Browser security or hardware acceleration: If the issue occurs in a browser or with accelerated video, check the browser and recorder guidance for these settings. Change one setting at a time, test again, and restore the original setting if performance gets worse.
- Security software: Check whether security software could be interfering with the capture app. Do not disable protections broadly; follow the recorder vendor’s guidance for any test.
- Graphics drivers: Check for driver updates if the recorder vendor recommends them for your device and symptom.
TechSmith lists browser security, hardware acceleration, permissions, security-software conflicts, and graphics drivers among possible troubleshooting areas. Its guidance does not establish that any one change resolves every black-screen recording.
4. Check whether the black screen is in the capture or only in playback
If the live capture preview looks correct but the saved file appears black in a player, test the file in another compatible player before changing capture settings. Codec compatibility is one possible explanation for a file that plays black; Bandicam lists missing or incompatible codecs among possible causes. A black live preview by itself does not prove that the problem is a codec.

5. Match the symptom to the first check
